Iron Horse is looking for a hands‑on Maintenance Technician to help keep our railcar repair plant, equipment, and support systems operating safely and reliably.
We are looking for a mechanic first. You do not need to know how to repair every piece of equipment in our plant. What matters most is that you know how to diagnose a problem, determine what is causing the failure, and make the repair.
This position is a great fit for someone with a background as a diesel mechanic, heavy equipment mechanic, fleet mechanic, automotive mechanic, agricultural equipment mechanic, industrial mechanic, or similar mechanical repair role.
If you've spent your career figuring out why an engine, motor, pump, piece of equipment, or electrical system isn't working—and then fixing it, we want to talk to you.
Industrial maintenance experience is valuable, but it is not the only path into this position. We can teach you our equipment and processes. We need someone who brings strong mechanical troubleshooting skills, good judgment, and a willingness to learn.
What You’ll Do- Diagnose and repair mechanical problems with plant equipment and support equipment.
- Perform preventive and corrective maintenance to keep equipment operating safely and reliably.
- Troubleshoot engines, motors, pumps, equipment, and mechanical systems.
- Diagnose basic electrical problems, including tracing wiring, identifying faulty components, and making repairs.
- Perform repairs on diesel engines, gasoline engines, and other powered equipment as needed.
- Troubleshoot and repair hydraulic and pneumatic systems.
- Use diagnostic equipment, hand tools, power tools, hoists, and other maintenance equipment.
- Perform basic welding, cutting, and fabrication for maintenance repairs.
- Operate forklifts and other industrial vehicles or learn to operate them safely.
- Move trailers and equipment around the facility as needed.
- Respond to equipment problems and prioritize repairs based on safety and operational needs.
- Work independently while communicating clearly with the Maintenance Manager and other team members.
- Maintain tools, equipment, and work areas in a clean and safe condition.
- Follow company safety procedures and OSHA requirements.
The most important qualification is the ability to troubleshoot and repair mechanical equipment. We are looking for someone who can:
- Diagnose why equipment is not working rather than simply replacing parts until something works.
- Read and understand basic mechanical and electrical systems.
- Use diagnostic tools and follow a problem from symptom to root cause.
- Perform mechanical repairs independently.
- Troubleshoot engines, motors, pumps, and other equipment.
- Work safely with tools, equipment, and machinery.
- Learn unfamiliar equipment and systems.
- Work independently and make sound decisions when priorities change.
Experience in any of the following is highly relevant:
- Diesel mechanic
- Heavy equipment mechanic
- Fleet mechanic
- Automotive mechanic
- Agricultural equipment mechanic
- Industrial maintenance
- Construction equipment repair
- Small engine repair
- Other professional mechanical repair environments
2+ years of relevant professional mechanical or equipment repair experience is preferred, but we will consider candidates who demonstrate strong mechanical ability and troubleshooting skills.
A high school diploma or GED and a valid driver's license are required.
Preferred SkillsYou do not need to have all of these skills. Additional experience in the following areas is a plus:
- Diesel engine repair
- Electrical troubleshooting and wiring
- Hydraulic systems
- Pneumatic systems
- Welding and fabrication
- Industrial pumps and valves
- Small engine repair or rebuilding
- Bearings, belts, chains, motors, and other mechanical components
- Forklifts and heavy equipment
- Skid steers, man lifts, or similar equipment
