Transportation Mechanic
Perform major mechanical repairs with minimal supervision to ensure proper performance and safety of district vehicles.
Education/Certification:
High School Diploma or GED preferred
Valid Texas Commercial Drivers License (Class B with Air Brake and Passenger endorsement)
Special Knowledge/
Skills:
Advanced knowledge of diesel and gasoline engine maintenance and repair Ability to diagnose mechanical problems and perform repairs independently Ability to operate equipment and tools involved in vehicle repair Ability to lift heavy equipment and parts Ability to pass alcohol and drug test Acceptable driving record Ability to operate a bus
Experience:
Five years experience as a mechanic preferred
Evaluate mechanical problems in vehicles using diagnostic equipment. Service vehicles according to established preventive maintenance schedule. Change oil and filters, lubricate vehicle parts, inspect and replace belts, hoses, mirrors, lamps, and maintain all fluid levels. Perform preventive maintenance on shop equipment, including bleeding air tanks, according to established schedules. Rebuild, replace, or repair major vehicle components, assemblies, and systems including engines, transmissions, suspensions, brakes, etc.
Check and repair electrical and cooling systems. Install heaters, air conditioners, and similar accessories. Perform welding and minor body work. Estimate time and materials required to perform major repairs. Analyze engine performance and perform tune-ups as needed. Perform routine vehicle maintenance and preventive care. Maintain accurate and updated preventive maintenance records. Operate tools, equipment, and machinery according to prescribed safety procedures.
Follow established safety procedures and techniques to perform job duties including lifting, climbing, etc. Help keep shop, equipment, and tools in safe operating condition. Correct unsafe conditions in work area and report any conditions that are not correctable to supervisor. Maintain accurate records of time and materials required to perform repairs and service. Operate buses and other vehicles as needed.
