About the Position
Fleet Service Consultant – Austin Fleet Mobility Department. The successful candidate will support the city’s fleet of over 7,500 vehicles across 25 departments, ensuring timely repair, maintenance and service, and providing excellent customer communication and data analysis to drive efficiency.
Responsibilities- Triage vehicle and equipment problems and determine need for repair through visual inspection.
- Create itemized work orders, verify charges, and facilitate payment processing.
- Coordinate with outside vendors for parts and specialized services.
- Communicate repair status and timelines to customers, user departments, and service center personnel.
- Determine the nature and severity of mechanical problems through customer communication.
- Schedule and coordinate repairs with other departments and fleet liaisons.
- Manage road‑service, wrecker, and tire‑repair logistics, maintaining call logs.
- Maintain on‑site inventory and ensure all vehicles/equipment have active work orders in the fleet information management system.
- Generate and distribute vehicle and equipment repair reports as required.
- Analyze data to identify workflow efficiencies and enhance customer service strategies.
- Provide leadership, work assignments, evaluation, training, and guidance to other team members (if applicable).
- Customer‑relations practices.
- General maintenance and repair knowledge for vehicle/equipment.
- Quality control methods, job standards, and work‑order processing.
- Pricing, labor hours, equipment and materials management.
- Complex information communication (verbal and written).
- Organizational skills with strong attention to detail.
- Computer proficiency – MS Office and database/email systems.
- Complex data analysis.
- Ability to work with frequent interruptions and changing priorities in a rapid‑paced environment.
- Professional demeanor, tact, and courtesy in customer and vendor interactions.
- Follow work‑related directions and instructions accurately.
- High‑school graduation or equivalent.
- Four (4) years of experience in an automotive or equipment services environment with liaison duties to customer and organization.
- Combination of education and experience may substitute for the minimum qualifications.
- Class C driver’s license.
- Potential requirement to obtain a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) within 120 days of employment.
- Master ASE (Automotive Service Excellence) certification or equivalent (e.g., EVT, CAFS).
- Ability to obtain ASE Service Consultant certification within six (6) months.
- Auto‑body estimating experience.
- Aftermarket vehicle upfit experience, including emergency communication and lighting.
- Direct customer service and vendor coordination experience in a customer‑facing role.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook).
- Experience managing on‑site inventory and maintaining fleet information systems.
- Adaptability to frequent interruptions and changing priorities.
Monday – Friday, 7:00 AM – 4:00 PM. Occasional evening, weekend, and/or holiday work may be required.
