Shop Manager

Supervise daily activities of vehicle repair and maintenance operation to ensure proper performance and safety of transportation department vehicles. Purchase, stock, and maintain inventory of parts for repairing vehicles. Investigate all vehicle accidents involving transportation department vehicles.

Education/Certification:

High school diploma or GED. Valid Texas Commercial Drivers License (Class B with all School Bus Driver required endorsements). Special Knowledge/

Skills:

Working knowledge of automotive mechanics and maintenance. Ability to direct and supervise personnel and coordinate shop operations. Ability to pass drug and alcohol test. Acceptable driving record. Ability to operate bus. Knowledge of auto parts and terminology. Knowledge of purchasing procedures. Ability to use personal computer and software. Ability to investigate vehicle accidents and file insurance documents. Working knowledge of environmental laws and filings.

Experience:

Supervisory experience preferred.

Assign priority to vehicle repair work orders and process. Evaluate and recommend all repairs. Assign all vehicle repairs to personnel and oversee completion. Arrange contract repairs when work cannot be performed in the shop. Assign welding and minor body work to keep vehicles operating. Establish preventive maintenance and care schedules. Inspect work performed by mechanics in overhaul and repair of district vehicles.

Follow established safety procedures and techniques to perform job duties including lifting, climbing, etc. Correct unsafe conditions in work area and report any conditions that are not correctable to supervisor immediately. Investigate all accidents involving transportation department vehicles and determine if possible cause of accident. Operate tools, equipment, and machinery according to prescribed safety procedures. Review and approve completed work orders.

Compile, maintain, and file all physical and computer records required. Maintain accurate records of all fuel and lubricants used. Maintain records on parts used, time spent on labor, and cost of each repair job. Maintain records on all accidents involving transportation department vehicles. Detect and resolve problems with incorrect orders, invoices, and shipments. Keep shop, equipment, and tools in safe operating condition.

Recommend replacement of existing equipment. Order equipment and supplies and maintain accurate records. Supervise cleaning of buses by washing crew. Direct the upkeep and appearance of shop and parking lot areas. Work irregular hours and respond to after-hours emergency calls as needed. Load and unload tapes for video monitoring systems. Maintain accurate information for payroll reporting. Understand and comply with laws and regulations on transportation and safety.
