Medication Aide

Under supervision of the Registered Nurse (RN) or the Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN), provides resident care in accordance with the Ohio Nurse Practice Act. The Medication Aide-Certified (MA-C)/STNA is responsible for caring for residents both physically and emotionally to enhance quality of life, including ADL and rehabilitation activities.

• Participates in and receives nursing report upon reporting for duty.
• Documents all medications and treatments administered at the time of service.
• Accurately and promptly documents in EMR.
• Performs activities related to medications and treatments according to community policies and procedures.
• Maintains control of drugs in the medicine cart (excluding locked scheduled drugs); monitors for discrepancies and reports promptly.
• Assists residents at mealtimes and with personal care, including bathing, grooming, and hygiene.
• Explains procedures to residents before administering and drapes residents for examination and treatment.
• Keeps residents dry and changes clothing or linen as needed.
• Assists with bowel and bladder functions, including emptying urinary drainage bags and recording amounts.
• Assists with lifting, positioning, and transporting residents safely, and helps with ambulation as instructed.
• Performs restorative and rehabilitative procedures.
• Ensures call lights are within reach and responded to promptly.
• Meets residents' personal care needs and respects their wishes.
• Reports changes in residents' condition to supervisor promptly.
• Handles linens according to infection control guidelines and maintains cleanliness of resident areas.
• Assists residents in preparation for appointments and activities.
• Uses creative problem solving to meet residents' needs within scope of responsibility.
• Provides post-mortem care as instructed.
• Performs special nursing care duties, including identifying and reporting abnormal skin conditions.
• Prepares residents appropriately for meals, serves food, assists with feeding, and ensures hydration.
• Records all care entries accurately and participates in care conferences and care plan follow-ups.
• Performs admission, discharge, and transfer duties as required.
• Maintains confidentiality and utilizes supplies and equipment properly.
• Reports structural, equipment, or furniture defects and handles unusual occurrences calmly.
• Maintains effective communication with residents, families, and staff.
• Follows safety, security, and care protocols, especially in the Dementia Care Unit.
• Participates in educational, training, and special activities as needed.
• Performs all other duties as assigned.

The MA-C will not perform the following:

• Give medications requiring dosage calculations or via nasogastric, gastrostomy, or Jejunostomy routes.
• Regulate IV fluids, program IV or insulin pumps, administer injections including insulin, or give scheduled II controlled substances.
• Administer the first dose of a new medication or call physicians regarding client status or medication needs.
• Accept verbal or telephone orders from physicians.
• Administer oxygen, PRN narcotics, or inhalants requiring calculations.

• Accountability, Accuracy, Communication (Oral and Written), Customer Orientation, Detail Orientation, Empathy, Honesty/Integrity, Interpersonal Skills, Patience.

• High School diploma or GED preferred.
• No prior experience necessary.
• Proficient in computer use, internet, and basic office equipment.
• Completion of state-approved Nursing Assistant program and MA-C training; must maintain certifications.
• Ability to assist during therapy, communicate effectively, operate equipment, and adhere to all policies.
