Scope of Position

This position is the first impression of The Salvation Army for staff, guests, and clients and requires a positive, calm, welcoming demeanor and cooperative attitude with excellent people skills. The employee will greet and record all guests entering and calling the facility with professionalism and courtesy. All employees must work within the policies and procedures of The Salvation Army, The Salvation Army Veterans and Family Center, and the Veterans Administration, and adhere to strict confidentiality (HIPAA compliant).

Excellent written and verbal communication in a professional manner is essential.

The individual hired for this position must not participate in any form of substance abuse or show evidence of use while on Salvation Army property.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Required
  • Must be a cooperative member of a team and encourage clients and guests to do the same.
  • Consistent attendance, accuracy, and timeliness in task completion.
  • Working knowledge of office equipment, telephone, fax, copier, and computer.
  • Effective written and verbal communication.
  • Self-discipline to perform repetitive tasks without lowering quality.
  • Ability to follow directions and complete daily tasks with a flexible, self-motivated schedule.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects in a time-sensitive manner.
  • Ability to communicate critical information during stressful moments.
  • Ability to receive and follow directions.
  • Monitor safety and security of the facility and clients using cameras and controlled entries.
  • Familiarity with client/house rules, Salvation Army policy, and Front Desk procedures.
  • Maintain files and information appropriately and manage front desk paperwork (Daily Register, Sign In/Out, Curfew/AWOL, etc.).
  • Remain awake and alert at all times for safety and security.
  • Assist the intake of new clients and scheduling as needed.
  • Maintain a neat, clean, orderly, and professional front desk.
  • Report concerns and incidents to a supervisor or appropriate staff.
  • Attend team meetings when scheduled.
  • Conduct and record BA testing using a Breathalyzer and observe/record Urinalysis testing as assigned.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Working Conditions

The front desk is the hub of the facility; expect interruptions and noise from phones, printers, copiers, walk-in traffic, deadlines, and competing priorities. Frequent in-person and phone contact with people from diverse backgrounds who may be upset is common.

Physical Requirements

Regularly sit, use hands to handle objects, talk or hear, reach with hands and arms, stand, bend, squat, climb, kneel, and twist. May occasionally lift up to 50 pounds. Vision requirements include close and distance vision. Occasionally work outdoors and in inclement weather.

Education & Experience
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Education and/or work experience commensurate with duties and responsibilities.
  • Experience with diverse populations including Veterans, shelter clients, and people experiencing homelessness.
