Entry Level Civil Engineer – Temporary Works / Structures

Location: Beaverton, Oregon

Job Type: Full-Time

About the Role

We are looking for an Entry Level Civil Engineer specifically interested in the fast‑paced world of Temporary Works. While others focus on finished buildings, bridges, wastewater treatment plants, dams, etc., you’ll focus on the engineering that makes construction possible, designing the systems that keep sites safe and standing during the build. There are even opportunities to drive into the world of permanent structures from time to time.

What

You’ll Do
  • Temporary Design: Design and analyze systems similar to shoring, scaffolding, formwork, crane trestle, oscillator platforms and cofferdams to support active construction loads.
  • Site Engineering: Conduct field inspections to ensure temporary structures are installed according to your plans.
  • Rigging & Lifting: Assist in developing crane lift plan, lifting devices, and specialized rigging setups for heavy equipment.
  • Structural Analysis: Perform calculations for lateral earth pressures, wind and/or seismic loading for anchoring equipment and equipment foundations. Structural evaluation of new or existing structures for temporary loading of cranes, trucks, forklifts and various other equipment.
  • Demo Analysis: Apply structural analysis for taking down buildings, trusses and bridges.
  • Use All Materials for Design: You will use all codes, IBC, OSSC, ASCE, ACI, NDS Masonry, AISC, ASME, ANSI and others to complete your designs.
  • FEA Software: Learn to use AutoCAD, RISA-3D, Visual Analysis and Solid Works to evaluate structures.
What We’re Looking For
  • Education: BS in Civil or Structural Engineering.
  • Mindset: A “puzzle‑solver” who enjoys the logistical challenges of active construction sites.
  • Certification: EIT (Engineer‑in‑Training) preferred but negotiable.
  • Tech

    Skills:

Proficiency in CAD; exposure to structural analysis software is a plus but not required.
  • Communication: Ability to develop calculation packages, technical memos, spreadsheets and more. Also be able to work with and explain technical designs to site superintendents and field crews.
Why This Field?

Temporary works engineering offers immediate feedback. In most cases you’ll see your designs built, used, and struck down within months, not years. We provide full mentorship toward your PE/SE license and hands‑on experience. It is a fast‑paced world that offers wonderful engineering challenges.

Why VAK?

We are a small company with an open floor plan and an informal work environment. We work as a team and anyone is open for questions at any time so plenty of help if needed. The owners are hands on with all aspects of the job and are there to help everyone succeed. We have many example projects in the past.
