Position: Field Construction/Maintenance Technician 1

The Utility Services and Operations Department is seeking multiple Field Construction/Maintenance Technicians for the Field Operations Division. This position operates, maintains, constructs, repairs, and/or inspects sanitary sewer and storm sewer conveyance infrastructure and associated system components including pipelines, manholes, catch basins, outfalls, culverts, water quality facilities, flow monitors, and rain gauges.

Additional Information
  • Two Vacancies:
    • One vacancy in the SWM Surface Facility Maintenance Program, which focuses on maintaining storm water quality facilities by removing sediment, mowing, spraying, seeding, pruning, and/or planting.
    • One vacancy in the TV/Flow Monitoring Program, which focuses on installing, operating, and maintaining flow monitors and rain gauges; retrieving, processing, and uploading data, and performing repairs and maintenance on mechanical and electronic equipment.
  • Selected candidates will start at the bottom of the pay range.

  • Maintain sanitary and storm sewer conveyance infrastructure including pipelines, manholes, catch basins, siphons, culverts, and outfalls using specialized sewer cleaning equipment.
  • Construct, repair, and rehabilitate sanitary and storm sewer pipelines, manholes, and catch basins, using traditional and trenchless construction techniques; read and work from maps and construction plans; perform pipe laying and repairs involving excavations.
  • Perform preventive maintenance inspections of sanitary and storm conveyance infrastructure; use smoke, air, or dye testing equipment to test for infiltration and inflow; inspect pipelines with computer based TV inspection equipment and document pipeline condition.
  • Maintain storm water quality facilities by removing sediment, mowing, spraying, seeding, pruning, and/or planting.
  • Install, maintain, and operate flow monitors and rain gauges. Retrieve collected rain and flow data, edit and manipulate into readable formats, and input into appropriate areas of District's server.
  • Use safe work practices and follow all District and Departmental safety policies and procedures.
  • KNOWLEDGE OF
    • Materials, methods, and equipment used in public works field such as sanitary sewer, storm water, water line, street maintenance and repair
    • Traffic control and flagging
    • Construction and/or maintenance safety procedures
    SKILL IN
    • Use of hand tools and small gas powered tools
    • Basic use of computer applications
    ABILITY TO
    • Learn to safely operate maintenance and construction equipment such as sewer cleaning equipment, street sweepers, TV inspection equipment, excavation equipment (loaders, trackhoes, and backhoes), dump trucks, and trailers
    • Understand and follow safety practices, policies, and procedures
    • Follow oral and written instructions
    • Read and interpret construction plans and maps
    • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work including co-workers, other District employees, and the public

    EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING GUIDELINES

    Any combination of experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities is qualifying.

    6 months experience in public works, heavy construction, agriculture, landscaping, mobile equipment operation, surveying, field inspections, operating mechanical or electronic equipment.

    College level coursework or equivalent in engineering or environmental technology, civil engineering, surveying, geography, wastewater technology, construction technology, or related fields.
