The Student Success Center at West Virginia University Institute of Technology located in Beckley, West Virginia is currently accepting applications for aStudent Success Center Advisor.

About the Opportunity

The Student Success Center Advisor will advise first-time freshman and new transfer students in their intended program of study. Work with undeclared/general education students to identify a program of study.

What You'll Do
  • Advise continuing students for the first three semesters of coursework.
  • Interpret the WVU Tech Catalog policies and procedures for the purpose of assisting students matriculating to degree programs, academic majors and academic minors.
  • Assist students with transfer/transient credits, working closely with the Office of the Registrar to conduct a preliminary evaluation of transfer credits, and identify how work completed applies to WVU Tech programs of study.
  • Understand placement scores for proper registration in math and English courses.
  • Suggest courses based on student financial aid package requirements and build schedules with the necessary degree pursuant courses.
  • Monitor students’ progress using early alert and mid-semester grade reports. Based on the data collected, contact students and make recommendations.
  • Identify and provide timely outreach for at-risk students to assist in university retention initiatives. Provide follow-up advising for those students.
  • Provide advising and counseling to students who are on probation, deferred suspension or who have been reinstated after suspension.
  • Respond timely to student inquiries and communications.
  • Assist students in analyzing and identifying solutions to academic problems; identify personal issues and refer students to appropriate campus resources
  • Follow SSC policies and procedures on file review, documentation, confidentiality, and data management.
  • Utilize student information systems (i.e. Banner, Degree Works, and Navigate) to track and monitor academic history and in-progress work.
  • Work collaboratively with the academic departments, Office of the Registrar, Student Life, and Admissions to ensure student success.
  • Participate in planning and execution of events such as Golden Bear Registration Day events, New Student Orientation, and Freshman Seminar course. As part of the SSC Advising team and in cooperation with other University departments, develop, host, and present academic information workshops.
  • Serve on college- and/or university-wide task forces/committees that impact student success at WVU Tech.
  • Actively participate in professional development opportunities as appropriate to keep abreast of research and current best practices in academic advising and related services.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
  • A minimum of four (4) years of related experience
  • Any equivalent combination of related education and/or experience will be considered.
  • All qualifications must be met by the time of employment.
