TERM: Minimum 200 days annually, pursuant to WV Code §18A-4-8; extended employment days may be established by HCBOE
SALARY: Pursuant to WV Code §18A-4-8a, in accordance with Hampshire County Salary Schedule, Pay Grade D; commensurate with experience and education level plus competitive benefits package equal to approximately 35% of direct compensation.
EvaluationPerformance will be evaluated by the Transportation Supervisor and in accordance with WV State Code §18A-2-12, WV State Board Policy 5314, and HCBOE Evaluation Policy for Service Personnel.
Job SummaryOperate a school bus or other school transportation vehicle, ranging in size from 15‑passenger to 90‑passenger, to pick up and drop off students at regularly scheduled locations.
Responsibilities- Perform pre/post trip inspections.
- Learn route, including pick‑up and drop‑off locations.
- Safely use fire extinguisher.
- Assist and supervise students with disabilities.
- Communicate with students, parents, school officials, and supervisors.
- Mop and clean inside and outside the vehicle.
- Complete proper paperwork.
- Capacity to sit for long periods of time.
- Care for ill children and clean up from student sickness accidents.
- Walk from the operator’s seat to the rear of the bus.
- Open all emergency exits.
- Install snow chains on a bus.
- Raise the hood of a conventional school bus and check oil and antifreeze levels.
- Remove obstructions from windshield and under wiper blades.
- Secure a wheelchair, fasten safety harnesses, and other equipment as necessary.
- Perform all duties outlined in WV State Board Policy 4336.
- High School diploma or equivalent.
- Must be at least 21 years of age.
- At least three years of driving experience as a licensed operator of any vehicle.
- Must obtain and maintain WV CDL license with passenger and school bus endorsement.
- Must successfully complete WV School Bus Safety Program and pass required online and skills test.
- Must be able to climb in and out of bus to check engine compartment.
- Must maintain valid CPR, First Aid certification, and Epi Pen training.
- Must pass a physical examination and drug and alcohol screenings.
- Must meet all requirements outlined in WV State Board of Education Policy 4336.
- Dress appropriately and conforms to safety standards.
Frequent lifting and/or moving of at least 50 pounds; 100 pounds vertically for Special Education bus. Includes frequent stooping, reaching overhead, standing, walking, lifting, grasping, writing, speaking, hearing, seeing, and using repetitive motions. Requires endurance to meet multiple demands and interact with the public and staff.
Work EnvironmentExposure to extreme temperatures from below freezing to occasionally 100°F. Noise level moderate to loud (60-90 dB). Five-day workweek with split‑shift schedule. Requires safe navigation through heavy traffic, handling passengers, and maintaining bus condition.
Additional NotesEmployees must remain free of alcohol or non‑prescribed drugs in the workplace. Alcohol and controlled substances that affect productivity, safety, or judgment will not be tolerated.
