Job Description

Bedford Public Schools invites applications for the position of Van Monitor (Preschool).

This position is accountable for assuming the responsibilities for the safety, supervision, monitoring, daily pickup and delivery of children in need of special education from their designated pickup to their school and their safe return from school to their pickup.

Responsibilities
  • Be attentive and respond to any need or problem a child in need of special education may have that may cause difficulties during transportation, e.g., behavioral concerns, seizures, or any disability.
  • Cross children safely when necessary.
  • Ensure children are seated safely, remain seated and are buckled while riding the bus.
  • Report behavior problems and maintain appropriate behavior of children riding the bus.
  • Confirm that all children are accounted for during pickup and deliveries to and from school.
  • Be trained to take necessary emergency measures.
  • Assure equal educational opportunity to all individuals regardless of race, color, gender, age, marital status, religion, gender identity, natural origin, sexual orientation, homelessness, or disability.
  • Perform additional job‑related duties as assigned.
  • Assist the driver with the pre‑trip safety inspection, as needed.
Qualifications
  • High School diploma or equivalent.
  • Physically capable of performing duties (lifting, carrying children, ambulatory and prosthetic devices).
  • Awareness and sensitivity for children with special needs.
  • Ability to work closely and cooperatively with driver(s) to ensure a safe and comfortable ride for students.
  • Working knowledge of effective techniques of discipline and behavior reinforcement.
  • Knowledge and ability to provide services for children with special needs; keep them safe and comfortable in transportation.
  • Successful completion of CORI and National background check.
