Description:
The METCO Elementary Coordinator serves as an advocate, mentor, and liaison for METCO students and families in grades K-5. The coordinator works collaboratively with school administrators, educators, families, and community partners to ensure that every METCO student experiences academic success, social-emotional growth, cultural affirmation, and a strong sense of belonging within Bedford Public Schools.
Grounded in the mission of the METCO Program, the coordinator promotes educational equity, strengthens family-school partnerships, and helps foster inclusive learning environments where every student is valued, supported, and empowered to reach their full potential.
Reports To: Director of METCO & Community Engagement
Essential Responsibilities
Student Advocacy & Support
- Serve as the primary advocate for METCO elementary students.
- Build positive, trusting relationships with students and families.
- Monitor students' academic progress, attendance, behavior, and social-emotional well‑being.
- Provide proactive interventions and individualized student support.
- Help students develop organization, self‑advocacy, executive functioning, and positive learning habits.
- Collaborate with educators to identify barriers to student success and develop appropriate interventions.
- Participate in Student Su pport Team (SST), MTSS, IEP, 504, and other student support meetings as appropriate.
- Support students during transitions into Bedford Public Schools and between Davis and Lane Schools and Lane and JGMS
Family Engagement
- Maintain consistent, responsive communication with families regarding student progress, concerns, celebrations, and school opportunities.
- Build trusting partnerships between families and Bedford Public Schools.
- Attend parent conferences as appropriate.
- Connect families with school and community resources.
- Support family engagement events, orientation programs, and transition activities.
- Encourage family participation in school events, METCO Parent Council meetings, and district initiatives.
Collaboration
- Collaborate regularly with principals, assistant principals, counselors, teachers, school psychologists, social workers, and the METCO Director.
- Partner with district staff to promote equitable educational practices.
- Participate in school-based problem-solving teams and student support meetings.
- Work collaboratively with METCO Inc. and other community organizations when appropriate.
- Participate in scheduled after school professional development on Wednesday early dismissals, except when immediate operational needs, as determined by building principal or METCO Director, require their assistance, such as supporting afternoon bus dismissal and supervision on bus ride.
Academic Support
- Provide individual and small-group academic support when appropriate.
- Assist students with organization, homework completion, long-term projects, and study skills.
- Promote student independence and self‑advocacy.
- Support students during designated METCO support periods or other scheduled intervention opportunities.
Equity, Belonging & Student Engagement
- Participate as a member of elementary and district wide inclusion and belong initiatives such as the Inclusive Practices Impact team and Equity Diversity Committee at the Lane School.
- Help create welcoming, affirming school environments where students' identities and cultures are celebrated.
- Support culturally responsive practices throughout the school community.
- Encourage student participation in extracurricular activities, enrichment opportunities, leadership experiences, and summer programs.
- Assist families in navigating transportation and participation logistics for school activities.
