Principal Engineer

Werfen is a global diagnostics company that focuses on Hemostasis, Acute Care Diagnostics, Transfusion, Autoimmunity, and Transplant. We develop, manufacture, and support medical diagnostic systems worldwide.

Using engineering procedures standard for research and development, the candidate will carry out assignments related to the research, design, development, support, or manufacturing of specific parts, processes, software, or components of medical diagnostic systems. The role requires independent evaluation and application of standard engineering techniques, with judgment for minor adaptations and modifications. The engineer will plan and conduct work using extensive engineering knowledge, maintain an overview of major product development, and make sound judgments for compromises as required to meet objectives.

Mentoring of junior staff is also part of the role.

• Acts as an individual contributor, core team member, or technical lead for a specific project or product line.
• Accountable for the completion of assigned deliverables in accordance with approved schedules.
• Authors documentation and participates in activities supporting design control.
• Independently plans, performs, and prioritizes complex tasks aligned with corporate goals.
• Analyzes and interprets data, identifies trends, formulates next steps, and performs trade‑off analysis when required.
• Leads, designs, and/or develops new test methods, specifications, technical apparatus, software, and processes for complex components.
• Evaluates complex designs or processes for acceptability, suitability, and cost; recommends preferred design options.
• Identifies product defects, recognizes outliers, documents defects, and explains their impact.
• Communicates technical information to multidisciplinary teams through documentation, presentations, and technical summaries.
• Provides technical expertise in at least one subject area and acts as a subject‑matter expert.
• Leads without authority and provides technical guidance to engineers and technicians on a given project; offers mentoring internally or externally.
• Provides technical support for CAPA or complaint investigations.
• Generates predictable schedules for activities, understanding cross‑functional dependencies.

• May review and provide input to deliverables from other functions.
• Recommends and drives improvement initiatives and motivates others to implement.
• May be assigned CAPA ownership.

• Statistical Analysis (if required by the function), Root Cause Analysis, Creative Problem Solving, Critical Thinking.
• Strong technical competence and confidence.

• Mentoring.

• Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Science, or a related field.
• Twelve years of product development or relevant experience.
• Eight to ten years of product development or relevant experience for advanced degrees.
• In‑vitro medical device experience highly desired.
• Proficiency in English language required.
• Preferred international mobility: not required.
• Some domestic and international travel may be required.

The annual base salary range for this role is $165,000 to $200,000. The role is eligible for medical, dental, and vision insurance, a 401(k) plan with employer match, paid vacation, and sick leave. Bonuses may be available for performance‑based achievements.
