Senior Engineer, Materials Quality Engineering
We are seeking a dynamic Senior Engineer to join our Materials Quality Engineering (Supplier Quality) team supporting our regional supplier base and US manufacturing operations. In this role, the engineer will be responsible for assessing and managing supplier risk, capability, and quality performance for mechanically fabricated components, including raw materials, precision machined parts, welded assemblies, and other engineered components critical to our manufacturing operations.
This position supports the Materials Solutions Division and the manufacturing plant in Bedford, MA while also working closely with global teammates. The ideal candidate will work with autonomy and sound engineering judgment to lead supplier development, drive continuous improvement, and maintain robust quality systems for critical mechanical suppliers. The role requires strong collaboration with Commodity Management, Operations, R&D, and Customer Quality teams to ensure continuity of supply and resolution of internal and customer issues.
- Lead supplier quality activities for raw materials, precision machined parts, welded assemblies, and other mechanically fabricated components.
- Drive supplier performance improvement, including corrective actions, audits, process capability reviews, and fabrication assessments.
- Support material and mechanical component qualifications, change management, and risk assessments.
- Analyze material, fabrication, and component-related issues and lead robust root cause investigations (8D, 5-Why, fishbone, etc.).
- Understand supplier fabrication processes (machining, grinding, lapping, cutting, welding, forming, heat treatment, etc.) and how component variation impacts downstream assembly and customer applications.
- Develop and maintain material specifications, mechanical drawings, fabrication standards, inspection criteria, and quality documentation.
- Collaborate with fabrication suppliers on process improvements, capability studies, control plans, and advanced quality planning activities.
- Support continuous improvement initiatives to reduce variation, improve yield, enhance reliability, and strengthen mechanical component performance.
- Apply continuous improvement methodologies, structured problem‑solving techniques, SPC, and FMEA independently.
- Analyze, synthesize, and summarize complex data sets to drive clear decision making and action.
- Partner with Business Units, Procurement, R&D, and Operations to ensure continuity of supply for materials and fabricated components.
- Monitor key supplier metrics and provide visibility and escalation to cross‑functional teams when needed.
- Participate in Business Continuity Planning (BCP) and risk mitigation strategies for critical suppliers and high‑impact mechanical components.
- Train suppliers on key requirements and expectations, including Change Control and quality system standards.
- Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Materials Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, or related discipline.
- Advanced degree optional;
Six Sigma Green Belt or Black Belt strongly preferred. - 5–7 years’ experience in semiconductor, automotive, aerospace, industrial equipment, or precision manufacturing industries.
- Experience with supplier quality engineering for mechanical or fabricated components strongly preferred.
- Working knowledge of GD&T, surface finishing, machining, welding, metrology, SPC systems, PFMEA, and control plan development.
- Proficiency with preferred statistical analysis software (Minitab, JMP, SAS, Camline).
- Strong project management, communication, and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to work independently, lead projects, and collaborate with cross‑functional teams.
- Ability to travel up to 10%.
- Expected to visit local suppliers as well as other domestic suppliers as needed.
- Compensation: $85,000 - $115,000 per year with actual pay dependent on candidate overall skills for the role.
