Intermediate Network Engineer

Technical staff in the Network Architecture, Security, and Data Analytics Department specialize in solving network-related problems critical to national well-being. Part of MITRE Labs’ Infrastructure and Networking Innovation Center, we research, develop, and employ advanced technologies in the areas of network modeling & simulation, dynamic network analysis, machine learning, cellular networking, software defined networking, programmable data plane, operational technology systems, future network science, and more.

The department’s culture emphasizes collaboration and openness. The department is seeking a network engineer who can support the organization’s routing & switching, virtualization, and cloud-related efforts.

Roles and Responsibilities:

Technical staff are expected to make impactful contributions on one or more mission-driven projects. Though projects and tasking are diverse and highly variable, some examples of what staff are expected to work on include:

• Working across diverse teams to deliver innovative networking & security solutions for multiple MITRE sponsors and MITRE internal communities of interest.
• Solving complex problems for MITRE and its sponsors in areas such as enterprise routing & switching, virtualization & cloud infrastructure, wireless & cellular infrastructure, and other networking related technology areas.
• Developing prototypes of networking and security capabilities in MITRE advanced labs.
• Conducting performance assessments of current & emerging networking technologies.
• Analyzing large sets of network data to understand trends and anomalies within a networking infrastructure.
• Investigating security vulnerabilities of networking architectures and protocols.
• Collaborating with government, industry, and academia to establish standards and best practices for networking & security solutions

Basic Qualifications:

• Typically requires a Bachelor’s degree and a minimum of 2 years of related experience; or an advanced degree without experience; or equivalent combination of related education and work experience.
• An Ability to obtain and maintain a DoD Secret level security clearance.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills.
• An ability to work in both individual and team settings.
• A strong understanding of TCP/IP and networking protocols (Ethernet, IP, TCP, UDP).
• Recent hands-on experience with network and security devices (IP routers, switches, firewalls, IPS, VPNs).
• Recent hands-on experience configuring core network services (DHCP, DNS, NTP, LDAP).
• Experience in scripting/software development languages such as Python, Ansible, Power Shell, and UNIX Shell scripting
• This position requires a minimum of 50% hybrid on-site

Preferred Qualifications:

• 3+ years of relevant experience
• Experience in cloud and virtualization technologies to include compute, storage, and networking in private and commercial cloud environments such as VMware, AWS, Open Stack, and Azure.
• Expertise in network programmability concepts such as Software Defined Networking (SDN) and programmable data planes
• A Master’s Degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, Computer Information Systems, Cybersecurity, Computer Engineering, or a similar engineering discipline.
• Associate level networking certification(s) such as a CCNA or JNCIA

Salary compensation range and midpoint:

$88,500 - $110,500 - $132,500 Annual
