Summary
Position within the Nursing Service (Mental Health) Inpatient Mental Health / Residential Rehabilitation Treatment Program at the VA Bedford Healthcare System, Bedford, MA. Full‑time 40‑hour week delivering high‑quality, patient‑centered and trauma‑informed care to individuals with co‑occurring mental health and substance use disorders, many experiencing homelessness.
Qualifications- United States citizenship or authorized non‑citizen appointment per VA policy
- Proficient in spoken and written English
- Graduate of an accredited practical or vocational nursing program (or meeting VA equivalent requirements)
- Full, active, unrestricted license as a Licensed Practical or Vocational Nurse in a U.S. state, territory, or D.C.
- Minimum experience requirements by grade level (GS‑3, GS‑4, GS‑5, GS‑6 as applicable)
- Demonstrated knowledge, skills and abilities (KSAs) for providing practical nursing care, medication administration, patient education, emergency response, and teamwork in a mental‑health setting
- Preferred: experience in mental health, detox, or residential treatment programs
- Provide direct patient care under the supervision of RNs, MDs, DOs, NPs, or PAs
- Assess and monitor patients’ physical and behavioral status, document findings in the electronic health record
- Administer medications and treatments per facility policies and VA regulations
- Respond to emergent situations and initiate appropriate emergency interventions
- Educate patients, families, and staff on health topics, medication use, and behavioral strategies
- Participate in interdisciplinary care planning and implementation of individualized care plans
- Support diagnostic and therapeutic procedures, and assist in complex or specialized tests as needed
- Fluently communicate in a team environment and promote a respectful, patient‑centered culture
