Summary

This Maintenance Mechanic position is in Facilities Management Services at the VA Bedford Healthcare System located at the Bedford - MA location. This position is a full time 40 hour a week.

Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Federal Wage System Qualification Standards. SCREEN-OUT ELEMENT:

Those applicants who appear to possess at least the minimal acceptable qualification requirement are considered for further rating; those who do not are rated ineligible and are eliminated. Note:

A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Physical Requirements:

Required to climb ladders - reach and lift heavy loads over forty (40) pounds and walk long distances in a regular day's work. A great amount of kneeling - bending and climbing stairways is required. Must wear safety and protective clothing or equipment prescribed for the work setting.

Working Conditions:

At times - it is required to work in areas that are poorly lighted. Must be required to work both inside and outside in all types of weather. Works in areas where clothes and skin can be soiled by grease - dust and steam. Must be required to work in areas that are noisy such as pump rooms and areas that are exposed to gases - dust smoke and fumes.

Works in all areas of the Medical Center - including contagious disease and/or contaminated areas. Required to work universal protection items - such as caps - gloves - gowns - mask - full face - or any safety equipment.

• The purpose of this position is to perform a wide range of work involving general maintenance of support work - survey of wards and buildings - review and completion of tasks in the Area Maintenance Log - maintenance and repair service equipment

  Must possess the ability to work alone - with minimum supervision - to occasionally direct the work of other tradesmen or lower grade employees assigned to assist their work
• Must test installs - maintains all electrical equipment - appliances and systems
• Locates and diagnoses trouble in electrical systems or equipment and makes necessary changes or repairs - laying out - assembling and installing electrical equipment
