Merchants Insurance Group is a leading Property and Casualty Insurer in the Northeast and is looking for a Regional Underwriting Supervisor for our Commercial Lines Underwriting team located in Bedford, New Hampshire.
The Regional Underwriting Supervisor will become part of a key dedicated underwriting management team focused on leadership and mentoring of underwriting colleagues. This position interacts extensively with internal colleagues, company management and outside Agent personnel.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities- Oversee the day-to-day workflow of small commercial new and renewal business. Monitor workloads to ensure timely quoting, renewal processing, and policy issuance consistent with service standards and regional capacity. Assist the Regional Underwriting Manager (RUM) in implementing workflow improvements, procedural updates, and operational efficiencies. Ensure team adherence to established processes and consistent application of underwriting standards.
- Small New Business Production. Support achievement of regional production and profitability goals through disciplined risk selection and proactive management of small new business submissions with an assigned underwriting territory.
- Underwriting Execution & Quality Control. Monitor underwriting decisions to ensure alignment with corporate guidelines, pricing discipline, documentation standards, and authority levels. Conduct regular file reviews to maintain accuracy, completeness, and regulatory compliance.
- Authority Oversight & Referral Review. Review and provide guidance in support of RUM on accounts exceeding individual underwriter authority. Escalate as appropriate and collaborate with the Regional Underwriting Manager on complex underwriting decisions.
- Staff Supervision & Coaching. Provide hands‑on coaching focused on underwriting judgment, file documentation, and service standards. Reinforce accountability and performance expectations.
- Qualified candidates will have a 4‑year degree or equivalent work‑related experience.
- 5 – 7 years commercial underwriting experience.
- Property and Casualty insurance related coursework is desired (e.g., CPCU).
- Previous Agency relationships within the local insurance industry – NH is highly desirable.
- Strong technical underwriting skills in small commercial lines.
- The ability to manage and prioritize high‑volume workflow.
- Microsoft Office knowledge as well as the ability to work with internal company systems (WINS, Image Right, etc.).
- Strong communication and organizational skills.
The estimated salary for this role ranges from $100,000 - $140,000 based on leveling and geography, along with an equity component and a comprehensive benefits package. This range is merely an estimate; actual compensation may deviate from this range based on skills, experience and qualifications.
