Merchants Insurance Group offers a hybrid work schedule requiring 2 full days per week in the office, with the option to work the remaining days at home or in the office.

Merchants Insurance Group, a leading Property and Casualty insurer in the Northeast, is looking for a Middle Market Underwriter for our Commercial Lines Underwriting team located in Bedford, New Hampshire. This role collaborates with agency partners to deliver professional service that achieves optimal outcomes for policyholders and profitable growth for Merchants and Agency Partners.

• Cultivate solid relationships with agency partners through in‑person and virtual meetings.
• Travel up to 10% of the work week to develop and maintain agency relationships.
• Individually underwrite both new and renewal accounts ranging from upper small commercial to lower middle market, targeting an average of $25,000–$250,000 in premium or as assigned by the Regional Supervisor or Manager.
• Work with the underwriting assistant to ensure adherence to corporate underwriting policy and service standards.
• Review accounts beyond individual authority with the Regional Underwriting Manager or Supervisor and recommend a course of action.
• Achieve commercial lines regional production goals and loss ratio objectives for the assigned territory.

• College degree or equivalent work experience.
• 6–10 years in the insurance business as a property‑casualty commercial lines underwriter with individual risk underwriting responsibilities.
• Strong background in underwriting commercial lines accounts and building agency relationships.
• Property and Casualty insurance related coursework is a plus (e.g., CPCU).
• Previous agency relationships within the local insurance industry are highly desirable.
• Microsoft Office knowledge and the ability to work with internal company systems (WINS, Image Right, etc.).
• Strong communication, organizational and computer skills.
• Ability to travel for approximately 10% of the work week.
• A valid driver’s license is required.

Merchants Insurance Group offers a competitive pay scale. The estimated salary for this role ranges from $90,000 to $120,000 based on leveling and geography, along with an equity component and a comprehensive benefits package. This range is an estimate; actual compensation may deviate based on skills, experience, and qualifications.
