Position: Family and Consumer Science Teacher (6-12)

Family And Consumer Science Teacher (6-12)

Teach Family and Consumer Sciences courses using a variety of instructional techniques that meet individual learning styles and promote the development of practical life skills, career readiness, consumer awareness, nutrition and wellness, family relationships, financial literacy, and workforce preparation.

Qualifications:

  • Valid Ohio teaching endorsement or license in Family and Consumer Sciences
  • Career-Technical Family and Consumer Sciences licensure preferred
  • Strong instructional skills and knowledge of Ohio Learning Standards
  • Knowledge of current practices in nutrition and wellness, personal finance, family studies, career readiness, consumer education, and related content areas
  • Ability to create an engaging, inclusive, and safe learning environment
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills
  • Ability to provide leadership and direction and to work cooperatively with other professional staff
  • Ability to maintain effective relationships with teachers, administrators, staff, parents, business partners, and community members
  • Ability to communicate effectively in written and oral form to staff, students, parents, and community members

Essential Functions:

  • Ensure safety of students
  • Effectively manage the classroom and individual student behavior
  • Prepare clear and timely lesson plans aligned with curriculum standards and program goals
  • Maintain accurate and complete records as required
  • Provide guidance to students to promote their educational, career, and personal development
  • Attend parent/teacher conferences
  • Collaborate with colleagues, counselors, administrators, and community partners
  • Distribute course-related assignments and instructional materials
  • Ensure students are learning all course content by appropriately assessing student performance on a regular basis
  • Provide complete lesson plans for substitutes
  • Create a classroom environment that is conducive to learning and appropriate to the maturity and interests of students
  • Assist the administration in implementing all procedures and rules governing student life
  • Follow the scope and sequence of the instructional program as defined in the Board of Education approved courses of study
  • Take necessary and reasonable precautions to protect equipment, materials, supplies, and facilities
  • Demonstrate knowledge of Family and Consumer Sciences subject matter and present clear, complete, and accurate explanations utilizing a variety of instructional techniques and media suitable to the level of learners
  • Maintain respect at all times for confidential information
  • Attend meetings and in-services as required per negotiated agreement
  • Teach students using sound instructional practices and hands-on learning experiences
  • Supervise and facilitate laboratory activities, projects, and career-related experiences as appropriate
  • Attend educational field trips and career exploration activities
  • Establish and maintain cooperative relationships with parents through effective use of interim reports, report cards, conferences, and other communications
  • Refer students suspected of learning difficulties to the intervention assistance team
  • Notify parents if a student is not meeting classroom goals
  • Observe ethics of the teaching profession
  • Integrate employability skills, career readiness, leadership development, and real-world applications into instruction
  • Support student participation in Family, Career and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA) or other related student organizations, if applicable

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Assist in the selection of textbooks, curriculum resources, equipment, supplies, and other educational materials
  • Promote good public relations with students, families, community members, and business partners
  • Respond to routine questions and requests in a timely and appropriate manner
  • Serve as a role model for students
  • Establish and maintain cooperative professional relationships
  • Participate in committees, study teams, advisory committees, and co-curricular activities as agreed upon
  • Participate in intervention assistance team meetings
  • Maintain and improve professional competence by attending professional seminars, workshops, conferences, and training to remain current on relevant issues and instructional practices
  • Supervise student teachers when assigned
  • Counsel, advise, encourage, and motivate students
  • Assist with career development activities, work-based learning opportunities, and community partnerships as appropriate
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Principal or designee

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of Family and Consumer Sciences content areas and teaching methodology
  • Ability to work effectively with others
  • Ability to communicate ideas and directives clearly and effectively both orally and in writing
