Position Summary
The Utility SCADA Engineer is responsible for the design, implementation, commissioning, and ongoing support of Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) systems used for utility operations and grid monitoring. This role supports mission-critical power and infrastructure environments by ensuring SCADA platforms deliver high reliability, availability, security, and performance. The position requires strong experience in utility automation, industrial communications, and control systems engineering.
Key ResponsibilitiesDesign, configure, test, and commission utility SCADA systems for real-time monitoring, control, and data acquisition.
Develop and maintain SCADA applications including HMI graphics, alarm management, trending, reporting, and historian integration.
Integrate SCADA platforms with RTUs, PLCs, IEDs, protection relays, telemetry devices, and field instrumentation.
Implement and support industrial communication protocols such as DNP3, Modbus, IEC 61850, and OPC UA/DA.
Collaborate with electrical, controls, networking, and IT teams to ensure seamless system integration and performance.
Support SCADA network architecture design, redundancy strategies, and system scalability.
Troubleshoot system failures, perform root-cause analysis, and implement corrective and preventive actions.
Support operational staff with real-time monitoring, system upgrades, and incident response activities.
Ensure compliance with applicable utility standards, cybersecurity requirements, and operational best practices.
Produce and maintain technical documentation including system architecture diagrams, configuration records, test procedures, and operating manuals.
Support factory testing, site acceptance testing (SAT), field commissioning, and end-user training.
Required QualificationsBachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, or a related technical field.
5+ years of experience working with utility SCADA systems, industrial automation, or operational technology (OT) environments.
Hands‑on experience with SCADA/HMI platforms such as Ignition, GE iFIX/CIMPLICITY, Wonderware, Schneider, or similar systems.
Strong understanding of industrial networking, communications infrastructure, and OT cybersecurity principles.
Experience supporting high‑availability, mission‑critical control systems.
Excellent troubleshooting, analytical, and problem‑solving skills.
Preferred QualificationsExperience in electric utility, water/wastewater, gas, or power generation environments.
Familiarity with electrical distribution systems, substation automation, and protection systems.
Experience with historian databases and data integration for reporting or analytics.
Professional certifications related to SCADA, industrial networking, or cybersecurity.
This role may involve a combination of office engineering work, field commissioning, and collaboration with operations personnel. Travel may be required for system deployment, testing, or troubleshooting at utility or infrastructure sites.
