Position: Essential Skills Teacher for Exceptional Learners

Essential Skills Teacher of Exceptional Learners
REPORTS TO: Building Principal REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Valid Indiana Mild Intervention and/or Intense Intervention Teaching License
  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Special Education
  • Commitment to collaborative team participation, ongoing professional growth, and effective engagement with diverse stakeholders
  • General knowledge of educational technology and digital literacy integration
  • Strong understanding of Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) and appropriate accommodations for students with disabilities
  • Effective implementation of differentiated instructional strategies
  • Demonstrated expertise in curriculum development, instructional planning, data analysis, mentoring, and/or professional development (supported by advanced training, degree, or experience)
  • Strong verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills
  • Effective analytical reasoning and data-driven decision-making skills
  • Positive attitude, growth mindset, and flexibility in a dynamic environment
  • Knowledge of effective de-escalation strategies and behavioral supports for exceptional learners
  • Experience working with individuals from diverse cultural and socioeconomic backgrounds
POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES
Instruction and Student Growth
  • Maintain a primary focus on delivering high-quality, specially designed instruction for exceptional learners
  • Plan and implement instruction aligned to Indiana State Standards and individual student IEP goals
  • Provide instruction using multiple service delivery models, including pull-out, push-in, co-teaching, and/or self-contained settings
  • Modify instructional strategies, materials, and assessments to ensure student access and progress
  • Ensure instruction is coordinated with general education curriculum to support inclusion and grade-level access
Case Management and Compliance
  • Serve as Teacher of Record or Teacher of Service in accordance with District Special Education Procedures and Article 7
  • Develop, implement, and progress monitor Individualized Education Programs (IEPs)
  • Ensure implementation of IEPs, accommodations, modifications, and supplementary aids/services
  • Ensure accommodations for district and state assessments are implemented with fidelity
  • Collect, analyze, and use student data to guide instructional decisions and monitor progress toward IEP goals
Collaboration and Instructional Leadership
  • Collaborate with the Director of Exceptional Learners, Student Services Specialist, and building-level teams (administrators, counselors/home-school advisors, nurses, office staff, and safety personnel)
  • Actively participate in case conferences, including initial evaluations, annual reviews, revisions, and other meetings
  • Support and coach colleagues in research-based instructional and behavioral strategies
  • Engage in co-planning, co-teaching, modeling, and conferencing to strengthen instructional outcomes
  • Communicate regularly with staff and families regarding academic, behavioral, attendance, and social-emotional progress
Professional Responsibilities
  • Maintain accurate documentation related to student progress and compliance requirements
  • Participate in ongoing professional development and training opportunities
  • Perform all other duties as assigned by the Principal and Director of Exceptional Learners
PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORK ENVIRONMENT
Physical Requirements
  • Frequent standing, walking, bending, and movement throughout the school day
  • Occasional lifting or physical assistance of students, including mobility support
  • Rapid response to student needs across classrooms, hallways, playgrounds, cafeterias, and specialized settings
Work Environment Expectations
  • Implementation of district-approved de-escalation and crisis intervention strategies
  • Active engagement with students requiring intensive behavioral and instructional support
  • Adherence to all district safety procedures and training requirements
