Job Summary

Performs entry‑level parole administration work: provides supervision to inmates, conducts parole investigations, obtains information, and prepares parole administration documentation under close supervision with minimal latitude for initiative and independent judgment.

Essential Functions
  • Schedule and conduct interviews with inmates to obtain information, explain the parole process, and deliver notices of parole panel action; compile documents, analyze information, and prepare reports including case summaries; perform data entry, retrieval, and data searches.
  • Screen sentenced inmates for special programs; verify parole eligibility dates; participate in screening, interviewing, and release processing of parole prospects; coordinate and communicate inmate information with staff, departments, officials, agencies, organizations, and the public.
  • Prepare responses to correspondence, inquiries, and inmate requests following established procedures regarding confidential information; respond to inquiries from inmates and the public in person, telephonically, and in writing.
  • Perform criminal information searches and retrieval using Texas Department of Public Safety criminal history system access.
  • Perform a variety of marginal duties not listed, to be determined and assigned as needed.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Education, Experience, and Training
    • Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university recognized by CHEA or USDE. Each year of experience may be substituted for thirty semester hours on a year‑for‑year basis, with a maximum of two years.
    • Experience in case work, criminal justice, military, or a related field preferred.
    • Must have a valid state driver license and maintain a valid license for continued employment.
    • Must obtain a certificate of course completion for the Texas Law Enforcement Telecommunications System (TLETS) policy and procedures training within six months of employment; maintain TLETS access eligibility.
  • Knowledge and Skills
    • Knowledge of the principles of criminology and penology.
    • Knowledge of parole case management principles, methods, techniques, and practices.
    • Knowledge of psychological concepts of behavior, social adjustment, and emotional stability.
    • Knowledge of applicable state and federal laws, rules, regulations, and statutes regarding pardons and paroles.
    • Knowledge of agency and departmental organizational structure, policies, procedures, rules, and regulations preferred.
    • Skill to communicate ideas and instructions clearly and concisely.
    • Skill to coordinate with other staff, departments, officials, agencies, organizations, and the public.
    • Skill to interpret and apply rules, regulations, policies, and procedures.
    • Skill in problem‑solving techniques.
    • Skill in the use of computers and related equipment in a stand‑alone or local area network environment.
    • Skill to prepare and maintain complex records and files in an automated system.
    • Skill to review technical data and prepare technical reports.
    • Skill to plan work in order to meet established guidelines.
    • Skill in the electronic transmission of communications.
    • Skill to interview and counsel inmates.
    • Skill to evaluate inmate adjustment and identify special problems.
    • Skill to type 45 words per minute with no more than 10 errors preferred.
  • Additional Requirements
    • Ability to walk, stand, sit, kneel, push, stoop, reach above the shoulder, grasp, pull, bend repeatedly, climb stairs, identify colors, hear with aid, see, write, count, read, speak, analyze, alphabetize, lift and carry 15‑44 lbs., perceive depth, operate a motor vehicle, and operate motor equipment.
    • Conditions include working inside, around machines with moving parts, radiant and electrical energy, closely with others, alone, protracted or irregular hours, and traveling by car, van, bus, and airplane.
    • Equipment used: computer and related equipment, calculator, copier, fax machine, dictation equipment, telephone, dolly, and automobile.
