Job SummaryUnder the direction of the Utility Operator, the Meter Reader records and reports water meter readings for the Billing and Collection Department. This position also performs related duties as assigned.
Essential FunctionsThe Meter Reader is responsible for delivering excellent customer service by accurately and safely completing monthly meter readings. Key duties include:
- Reading residential and commercial water meters using hand-held devices.
- Performing data entry into hand-held computers.
- Identifying and reporting issues or defects in water meters and metering equipment.
- Contacting customers regarding meter location or access issues in person, via phone, or in writing.
- Completing assigned work orders promptly.
- Assisting with repairs of malfunctioning or broken meters.
- Cleaning water meters and meter boxes.
- Operating a City vehicle to perform daily duties.
- Performing other related tasks as assigned.
- Regular and consistent attendance is essential.
- Work may include overtime, weekends, and holidays.
- Outdoor work in varying weather conditions, including extreme heat, cold, dust, wind, and rain.
- Physical demands include manual labor, walking long distances, and lifting up to 50 pounds repetitively.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Proficiency in computer operations and data entry.
- Strong customer service and communication skills.
- Knowledge of safe driving and work practices.
- Ability to maintain accurate records, organize tasks efficiently, and work independently under deadlines.
- Physical capacity to perform duties in environments where animals may be present.
Education and Experience:
- High School Diploma or GED required.
- Valid Texas Driver’s License or alternate transportation method.
- Must pass a pre-employment drug screen and criminal background check.
- Ability to obtain a minimum TCEQ “D” License within six months of hire.
- Prior experience in water utility meter reading or similar field preferred.
- Basic computer skills preferred.
