Job Summary
Performs advanced supervisory maintenance and construction work. Oversee maintenance and construction inmate staff involved in the installation, care, and repair of state facilities and equipment; supervise the work of inmates. Works under minimal supervision with considerable latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgment.
Essential Functions- Supervises, inspects, schedules, assigns, and participates in performing general maintenance, construction, HVAC, and refrigeration work including preventive and emergency maintenance; coordinate work assignments with other supervisors to ensure efficient use of resources.
- Prepares estimates of work hours, materials, and resources required for projects; initiates requisitions for materials and supplies; prepares reports and maintains records of repairs.
- Trains and supervises inmate maintenance and construction workers; ensures compliance with applicable safety rules, regulations, and standards.
- Assists in maintaining security of assigned inmates.
- Performs a variety of marginal duties as determined and assigned.
- Education, Experience, and Training:
- High school diploma, GED, or equivalent.
- Two years full‑time, wage‑earning experience in HVAC or refrigeration systems and equipment, or an associate’s degree in HVAC or Refrigeration from an accredited college or trade/technical school, plus one year of full‑time experience, or completion of a U.S. Military technical training program in HVAC or refrigeration plus one year of experience.
- Preferred:
Experience in installation of HVAC or refrigeration; experience in supervision of inmates. - Current EPA‑approved Type I and Type II Refrigerant Recovery Certification; must maintain valid license(s).
- Knowledge and
Skills:- Knowledge of HVAC and refrigeration systems and equipment.
- Knowledge of maintenance policies, procedures, and techniques.
- Knowledge of agency and departmental policies (preferred).
- Skill in use of related tools, equipment, and test instruments.
- Skill to communicate ideas and instructions clearly and concisely.
- Skill to coordinate with other staff and agencies.
- Skill to interpret and apply rules, regulations, policies, and procedures.
- Skill in problem‑solving techniques.
- Skill to prepare and maintain accurate records, files, and reports.
- Skill to plan work to meet guidelines.
- Skill to train and supervise inmate work.
- Ability to walk, stand, sit, crawl, twist, kneel, push, stoop, reach above shoulder, grasp, pull, bend repeatedly, climb stairs and ladders, identify colors, hear with aid, see, write, count, read, speak, analyze, alphabetize, lift and carry 45 lb. and over, perceive depth, operate a motor vehicle, operate motor equipment.
- Must work inside/outside, around moving machinery and objects, with radiant and electrical energy, close to others, alone, protracted or irregular hours; endure excessive heat, cold, humidity, dampness, dry atmosphere, noise, dust, fumes, grease, oils, solvents, uneven surfaces; work on ladders or scaffolding; travel by car, van, bus, airplane.
- Use of refrigeration test gauges, refrigerant recovery equipment, vacuum pumps, oxygen and acetylene torches, welding machines, drill motors, grinders, hand tools, telephone, dolly, automobile.
