The Senior Accountant is responsible for managing the company's accounting operations, financial reporting, construction job costing, and AIA billing processes. This role serves as a key member of the accounting team, ensuring accurate financial records, supporting project profitability analysis, and maintaining compliance with accounting standards and construction industry requirements. The ideal candidate will have strong construction accounting experience and proficiency using Sage 50.
- Prepare monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements.
- Perform month-end and year-end closing activities, including journal entries and account reconciliations.
- Maintain and reconcile general ledger accounts and balance sheet schedules.
- Assist with budgeting, forecasting, and cash flow analysis.
- Prepare management reports and financial analyses for leadership.
- Maintain accurate job cost records for labor, materials, equipment, and subcontractor expenses.
- Monitor project budgets and prepare cost-to-complete and profitability analyses.
- Review project cost allocations and identify variances.
- Maintain and analyze work-in-progress (WIP) schedules.
- Partner with project managers to ensure financial performance and budget adherence.
- Prepare and submit monthly AIA billings and progress payment applications.
- Process change orders and maintain contract billing schedules.
- Monitor retainage balances and collections.
- Coordinate with project managers to ensure accurate and timely billings.
- Follow up on outstanding receivables and resolve billing discrepancies.
- Review and process vendor and subcontractor invoices.
- Ensure invoices are properly coded and allocated to projects.
- Maintain subcontractor compliance documentation, including certificates of insurance and lien waivers.
- Assist with weekly check runs and vendor payment processing.
- Prepare sales and use tax filings and assist with annual audits.
- Support insurance audits, bonding requirements, and contractor licensing documentation.
- Maintain strong internal controls and accounting procedures.
- Identify and implement process improvements to increase efficiency and accuracy.
- Assist with special projects and strategic initiatives as assigned.
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field.
- 3+ years of progressive accounting experience, preferably within the construction or general contracting industry.
- Demonstrated experience with AIA billing and construction job costing.
- Proficiency with Sage 50 Accounting is required.
- Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel, including pivot tables, lookups, and financial reporting functions.
- Strong understanding of construction accounting principles, including WIP reporting and revenue recognition.
- Excellent analytical, organizational, and problem‑solving skills.
- Ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines in a fast‑paced environment.
- Experience supervising or mentoring junior accounting staff.
- Experience with percentage-of-completion accounting.
- Experience working closely with project managers and operations teams.
