Position: Highways Trades/Laborer (Perm/FT/Benefits)

Trades/Laborer

The Trades/Laborer is responsible for performing various skilled and semi-skilled tasks, including carpentry and masonry to repair and maintain bridges, buildings, equipment, storm drainage structures, etc. This position operates machinery, dump trucks, and specialized power and hand tools to carry out assignments.

Salary Range: $40,260.00-$

BUDGETED SALARY: $43,323.99/ANNUALLY

Essential Duties
  • Builds and sets forms, pours and finishes concrete
  • Operates power and hand tools, including those typically used in the carpentry and masonry trades
  • Operates equipment such as air compressors and their air-driven tools (tampers, jack hammers, etc.), concrete pumps, concrete finishing machines, gunite machines, water pumps, sandblasters, concrete saws, etc.
  • Lays brick and block
  • Adheres to applicable safety rules and regulations
  • Trains new team members or other staff on how to carry out work functions in accordance with Standard Operating Procedures
  • Assists in welding operations
  • On 24-hour call for emergencies

Three (3) years of trades/laboring experience in carpentry, masonry, or welding.

Education:

High School Diploma or equivalent

Certifications, Licensures, and Examinations:

  • Possession of a valid Class "A" CDL with "O" restriction and tank vehicle endorsement with no more than three (3) points. Valid Class "C" with no restrictions acceptable for job entry but must obtain valid Class "A" CDL license with "O" restriction and tank vehicle endorsement within six (6) months of appointment to the position.
  • Tree Trimming Certification within six (6) months of hire date (Required);
  • Flagging Certification within six (6) months of hire date (Required);
  • Chainsaw Safety Certification within six (6) months of hire date (Required);
  • Forklift Operator's Certification within six (6) months of hire date (Required)

  • Knowledge of construction methodologies
  • Ability to solve problems by analyzing information and using logic to address work-related issues and problems
  • Ability to leverage appropriate mathematical formulas and techniques to solve problems
  • Ability to provide internal and external customer service in a courteous manner
  • Ability to stay aware of and incorporate safe work practices even during emergency situations
  • Knowledge of skilled and semi-skilled construction and maintenance trades/labor tasks, and the machine tools and equipment to accomplish them
  • Ability to follow and execute tasks based on directions communicated in a variety of ways, including the ability to interpret Standard Operating Produces
  • Organizational skills, including the capacity to anticipate issues and prioritize tasks
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities or projects
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing
  • Ability to maintain composure, even in very difficult situations
  • Ability to manage conflict and tactfully handle complaints and difficult situations
  • Knowledge of Emergency Response and Preparedness
  • Ability to operate and perform general maintenance of relevant equipment

  • Knowledge and understanding of OSHA, DOT, EPA, DNREC, and safety codes, regulations, and requirements, or the ability to comprehend and apply such requirements

  • Ability to operate basic hand tools and maintain tools
  • Ability to perform minor maintenance on buildings, equipment, and grounds
  • Basic computer skills with the ability to utilize software, hardware, and communication devices to perform tasks
  • Equipment maintenance and repair skills

Safety:
Must comply with all Federal (OSHA), State of Maryland (MOSH), safety regulations, and applicable Harford County safety policies, procedures, or manual as required for this position.
