Position: Science - Chemistry (2026-2027 School Year)

Science – Senior High Teacher

Under the general supervision of the School Principal, this role facilitates student success and growth in academic and interpersonal skills through implementing district‑approved curriculum, documenting teaching and student progress, addressing specific educational needs of individual students, creating a flexible, safe and optimal learning environment, and providing feedback to students, parents and administration regarding student progress, expectations, and goals.

Essential Performance Responsibilities
  • Develops and administers high school curriculum consistent with district goals and objectives.
  • Promotes a classroom environment that is safe and conducive to individualized and small group instruction.
  • Develops lesson plans and instructional materials, translating lesson plans into learning experiences to maximize instructional time.
  • Conducts ongoing assessment of student learning and modifies instructional methods to fit individual student needs, including students with special needs; conducts individual small group instruction as needed.
  • Instructs students in responsible citizenship and other subject matters specified in applicable laws, as well as administrative regulations and procedures of the Wichita Public Schools.
  • Continuously acquires professional knowledge and stays current in the educational field by attending seminars, workshops, professional meetings, or conducting research.
  • Organizes and maintains accurate record‑keeping, grading, and reporting for all student activities, achievement, and attendance per district procedures and applicable laws.
  • Encourages parental involvement and ensures effective communication with students and parents.
  • Ensures student conduct conforms with school and district policies, establishing standards of pupil behavior to achieve a functional learning atmosphere.
  • Coordinates with other high school staff to evaluate and assess curriculum and participates in faculty meetings and committees.
  • Selects and requisitions appropriate books, instructional aids, supplies, and equipment, maintaining inventory records.
  • Supervises students in out‑of‑classroom activities, including transportation.
  • Administers standardized tests in accordance with district testing programs.
Additional Duties

Assists with additional duties as assigned by the supervisor.

Equipment

May require use of SMART Boards, iPads, and basic office equipment such as computers, copiers, scanners, and fax machine. Must comply with WPS guidelines for equipment use.

Travel

Limited travel between schools and central offices may be required.

Physical and Mental Demands
  • Works in standard office and school building environments.
  • Ability to work outdoors during student activities.
  • Additional demands upon request by Principal or Superintendent.
  • Must respond rapidly in emergency situations.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Knowledge of current teaching methods and educational pedagogy, including differentiated instruction based on student learning styles.
  • Knowledge of high school curriculum and concepts in all subject matters taught.
  • Knowledge of data information systems, data analysis, and formulation of action plans.
  • Knowledge of applicable federal and state laws regarding education and students.
  • Ability to use computer networks and software applications as needed.
  • Ability to organize and coordinate work.
  • Ability to engage in self‑evaluation with regard to performance and professional growth.
  • Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with others contacted in the course of work.
Qualifications
  • Kansas State License in Science.
  • KS Certification – Secondary.
  • Bachelor’s Degree in an education discipline applicable to the teaching assignment (accredited college or university).
  • Master’s Degree preferred.
  • Successful prior teaching experience for the appropriate grade level preferred.
Employee Punctuality and Appearance
  • Employees are expected to perform all assigned duties and work all scheduled hours unless approved leave is received.
  • Deviations from assigned hours must receive prior approval from the supervisor or building administrator.
  • Employees must report to work dressed in a manner reflecting a positive image of USD 259 and appropriate for their position.
FLSA Status

Exempt.
