Job Summary
Baystate Health is looking for a full‑time Orderly to join our team in Springfield, MA. This position focuses on managing unit equipment and ambulating patients. Reports to the Clinical Nurse Manager. Under the direction of an RN, the Orderly transports patients to tests and procedures, responds to code blue calls within the area of responsibility, maintains equipment, and contributes to the overall cleanliness of the unit.
Job Responsibilities- Account for all unit equipment (Dyna Maps, Pulse Oximeters, TABS monitors, Mobile Computer Carts, Bladder Scanner, C-90 tablets); ensure they are clean, functional, and properly inspected.
- Change or replace equipment parts within scope; remove and tag equipment needing repair; clean equipment after use; maintain order in storage areas.
- Make morning rounds with RN staff to assess need for stretchers, wheelchairs, MRI tables and other assistive devices; make hourly rounds to maintain an orderly environment.
- Communicate with unit staff to identify patients needing out‑of‑bed assistance for ambulation; obtain chairs for out‑of‑bed activity.
- Assist with unit transportation needs, including on/off stretchers and morgue transport.
- Relieve intermittent observers and constant companions as requested by the charge nurse.
- Assemble orthopedic equipment as required.
- Complete daily standing weights on patients and report weights to PCT or RN for CIS entry.
- Provide patient comfort and safety—assist patients with ambulation and positioning under RN direction.
- Participate in unit/team projects; communicate effectively with team and patients; clearly convey patient information to RN.
- Observe all health and safety requirements, including body substance precautions.
- Demonstrate competency for one‑to‑one observation of patients per department and unit needs.
- High School Diploma, GED, or equivalent experience.
- CPR – American Heart Association, Basic Life Support (BLS).
- Demonstrated competency in basic English literacy and mathematics.
- Prior customer service experience.
- Prior hospital experience with patient contact.
- Proficient in simple mathematics, reading, writing, following instructions.
- Ability to review and check patient records and forms.

Base pay range: $16.34 – $18.78 – $21.46 per hour for non‑exempt employees, based on experience and qualifications.
