The Theatre Fellow (TF) supports the production process for all live programming from Mid May to Late August, 2026. The primary job focus is stage management, serving as assistant stage manager to the AEA PSM for two mainstage productions as well as managing other performance events – live concert music, variety acts, and theatre. In addition, the TF may be required to provide labor and technical support for our annual gala and in other production departments.

Experience in lighting/electrics, sound, prop design/sourcing/fabrication, and/or costume design/fabrication is critical. All candidates should have proven experience working collaboratively.

The theatre fellow will report to the Production Manager and will work closely with the Stage Managers and Artistic Director.

This fellowship is funded by the generous support of Opera House Arts donors and the Lael Stegall Memorial Fund, an Opera House Arts fund managed by the Maine Community Foundation. Lael supported the work of women in theatre. Preference will be given to female identifying candidates.

Duties
  • Serving as Stage Manager for the Deer Isle Jazz Festival, Live! For $5 series and other non-Equity performances.
  • Serving as Assistant Stage Manager and run crew on the season’s theater productions, and attending rehearsals as necessary, including all technical rehearsals.
  • Wardrobe and props support as needed for Equity productions and special events.
  • Depending on the TF’s skills and interests, assignments may include electrics, costumes, carpentry, sourcing, and props construction.
  • Behaves with attention to, and in accordance with Actors Equity Association’s Independent Theatre Rulebook.
  • Adheres to all expected behaviors in the OHA personnel handbook.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Applicants must
  • Be 21 years of age by May 15, 2026.
  • Have a valid driver’s license.
  • Provide their own vehicle.
  • Practice safe driving habits and be able to drive at night.
  • Have a background in or knowledge of the performing arts and an interest in growing their skills in multiple areas of production.
  • Be highly dependable and an excellent communicator, with a welcoming, professional demeanor.
The ideal applicant will
  • Have a strong background in stage management with additional experience in electrics, costumes, wardrobe, carpentry and/or props.
  • Be actively pursuing a career in performing arts production as a student or early career professional.
  • Have a passion for the entertainment industry and a desire to learn and grow within the field.
  • Strong teamwork and communication skills, with the ability to perform effectively under pressure.
  • Basic understanding of stage equipment and technical elements.
  • Ability to follow directions accurately and execute tasks with attention to detail.
  • Willingness to work flexible hours, including evenings, and weekends, as required by production schedules.
  • Physical stamina and the ability to lift heavy equipment (up to 40 pounds without assistance) and work in demanding environments.
  • Willingness to work on ladders.
