Principal Geotechnical Engineer / Engineering Geologist (Full or Part-Time)
Job DescriptionLead a team of engineers to deliver geotechnical engineering services across the energy, water, defence, highway and railway sectors.
- Take day-to-day responsibility for project delivery ensuring technical quality, adherence to budget and programme.
- Oversee geotechnical design from feasibility/desk study through ground investigation, interpretation and final design.
- Provide expertise in technical review meetings, prepare bids and proposals, and take ownership of decisions and alternatives.
- Mentor junior staff and support their professional development.
- Collaborate with colleagues across the UK & Ireland and support projects in Ireland, the UK and internationally.
- Prepare, check and review geotechnical documents such as desk studies, interpretative reports, specifications, construction drawings and design reports.
- Active input to team and client technical review meetings; own decisions and propose alternative solutions.
- Prepare bids and proposals for internal and external clients.
- Mentor junior staff and oversee their training.
- BEng / MEng in Civil Engineering, BSc / MSc in Geology, Engineering Geology or Earth Science, or MSc in Geotechnical Engineering.
- Chartered Engineer (IEng/CEng) or Geologist (CGeol) status preferred, or on track to achieve within 12 months.
- Strong knowledge of UK and Irish ground conditions and investigation practices.
- Experience with typical ground conditions interpretation, parametric assessment and correlation methods.
- Familiarity with data management software such as Open Ground.
- Well‑rounded experience in geotechnical design and confidence in using design software such as Slope/W and Wallap.
- Experience producing geotechnical analysis and design packages, drawings, risk assessments, specifications and reports.
- Knowledge of Eurocode, British and Irish Standards required; CDM Regulations / Safety in Design experience expected.
- Industry experience in highways, railways or other specialised fields desirable.
- Understanding of consultancy and design markets, client relationship building, work planning and commercial management.
- Strong written and verbal communication; ability to produce clear technical reports and deliver confident presentations.
- Willingness to travel across Ireland and occasionally within the UK.
