ASSIGNMENT

Starting from 1 September 2026, a part‑time (70%) position of (Tenure Track) assistant professor is vacant in the Linguistics department of the Faculty of Arts and Philosophy, including academic education, scientific research and academic service in the domain of Second Language Acquisition and language didactics.

Academic education

In line with your qualifications, you will teach several courses in the Educational Master’s Program in Languages. You will be responsible for the course Foreign Language Teaching Methodology (this course focuses on teaching methodology for non‑secondary school languages such as Italian, Russian and Swedish) and will contribute to other teaching methodology courses within the program. In addition, you will oversee the internship associated with the course Foreign Language Teaching Methodology.

You will also supervise and assess master’s theses in the Educational Master’s Program in Languages.

Academic research

You conduct innovative and internationally recognized research in the field of Second Language Acquisition, preferably in an instructed context (Instructed Second Language Acquisition). You will do so in relation to (one or more of) the modern languages included in the educational master's program (German, English, French, Spanish, Dutch or non‑secondary school languages, e.g., Italian, Swedish, Russian) and you will join one of the research groups (MULTIPLES, GLIMS, Dia Ling).

You will collaborate with colleagues in the Educational Master program in the context of scientific research on Second Language Acquisition and language didactics.

Institutional and societal engagement

You take part in the internal and external service provision of the Department of Linguistics and the section you are affiliated with. You help support the daily functioning and quality assurance of the program you are part of (the Educational Master of Languages) and help shape professional development initiatives for language teachers. You actively contribute to the promotion and development of foreign language education in Flanders.

  • You have a strong academic CV with international visibility in the field of Second Language Acquisition.
    • You have conducted high‑quality scientific research in the domain of Second Language Acquisition, preferably with a focus on language learning in an instructed context, as evidenced by publications in high‑quality international journals and peer‑reviewed volumes.
    • You are capable to initiate and supervise research and to acquire the necessary funding for this (this criterion is assessed taking into account your career stage and the opportunities available in previous positions).
    • You have experience with empirical and experimental research involving second‑language learners (in an instructed context) and are familiar with commonly used methods and statistical techniques in Second Language Acquisition research to map language proficiency.
    • You are didactically skilled to teach university students to develop academic competences;
    • You have demonstrable experience in supervising bachelor’s or master’s theses.
