Photonics Design Engineer – High-Speed Modulators
Location: Belgium
Schedule: Full-time, Permanent
We are partnering with a leading R&D organisation in Belgium and the Netherlands to recruit an experienced Photonics Design Engineer
.
This role offers the chance to work on high-speed modulators
, explore new concepts and materials, and contribute to cutting-edge silicon photonics technology for next-generation optical communication.
As a Photonics Design Engineer, you will lead the development of high-speed modulators, exploring innovative concepts and material systems. You will work closely with cross-functional teams to design, validate, and enhance photonic components, subsystems, and circuits, driving performance toward 400G+ applications.
Key Responsibilities- Work as part of a photonic design team to develop advanced silicon photonics platforms.
- Introduce new high-speed modulator concepts, including opto-electronic and RF line design.
- Evaluate different modulator topologies, including micro-ring and Mach-Zehnder modulators.
- Integrate new material systems into existing mass-manufacturing platforms to enhance performance.
- Collaborate with process teams to improve or replace process modules of high-speed modulators.
- Design and validate photonic components, subsystems, and circuits.
- Define test plans and analyse experimental data during the R&D phase.
- Work closely with component/module and test teams to ensure successful development.
- PhD in Photonics, Electrical Engineering, Physics, or a related field with 3+ years’ experience,
or MSc in Photonics, Electrical Engineering, Physics, or a related field with 6+ years’ experience. - Design and testing of photonic components in silicon photonics or III/V materials.
- Proven track record in managing high-speed modulator development projects.
- Hands-on experience with photonics modelling tools (Lumerical, Photon Design, COMSOL, etc.).
- Hands-on experience with RF modelling and process modelling tools.
- General knowledge of silicon photonics devices and process flows.
- Hands-on experience with layout tools (e.g., Luceda Ipkiss).
- RF characterization experience, Python, and Linux are advantageous.
