This role contributes to Sortbat’s mission by ensuring state‑of‑the‑art testing and evaluation of lithium‑ion batteries, supporting both reuse in second‑life applications and safe recycling.
We are looking for a hands‑on Test Engineer to lead the development and execution of advanced battery testing methods for State of Health (SoH) and State of Safety (SoS) analysis. You will be the owner of testing methodologies, tools, and processes within Sortbat, ensuring that batteries are evaluated with the highest accuracy, efficiency, and safety. This role combines laboratory ownership, process design, and collaboration with R&D and suppliers to create scalable testing setups that can be replicated across facilities.
You will also play a key role in funded innovation projects, acting as process owner for everything related to battery testing. This is a multidisciplinary position ideal for someone who thrives in a collaborative, fast‑paced environment and wants to have a real impact on the future of energy.
- Testing Leadership:
Be the owner of methods and tools for SoX and SoH testing of lithium‑ion batteries. Source, select, design, and set up test equipment and infrastructure. Define and execute test specifications based on investigations and literature research. Lead experimental validation tests, thermal behavior studies, and degradation analysis. - Process & Tools Development:
Create and maintain test request (TREQ) templates, reporting templates, and a data retention process. Develop BMS tools together with the R&D team and implement them in the pre‑cycling process. Design blueprints for scalable testing setups to ensure replication across sites. Collaborate with suppliers to design state‑of‑the‑art testing facilities and processes, optimizing speed, quality, and cost. - Equipment & Calibration:
Establish and maintain the calibration strategy for all test equipment. Ensure calibration and data processes align with ISO certification requirements. Investigate and implement relevant IEC norms and international test standards into the laboratory environment to ensure compliance and certification readiness. - Cross‑Functional Work:
Act as the single point of contact (SPOC) for all battery testing‑related requests. Work closely with the Battery Technical Specialist to define testing strategy. Partner with the R&D team to co‑develop testing setups and processes. Take ownership of relevant work packages in funded R&D projects. - Reporting & Quality Tracking:
Establish a structured reporting system to make test results clear and visual for customers. Report on KPIs and build a KPI dashboard to monitor and improve test quality and efficiency. Develop reporting and data structures in line with future ISO certification standards.
- Master’s degree in Engineering (Electromechanical, Electrical, Industrial, or related fields) or equivalent by experience.
- Relevant experience in sourcing and commissioning test equipment.
- Strong skills in data processing, reporting, and dashboard creation.
- Experience with Gage R&R calculations, test repeatability, and reproducibility analysis.
- Proven ability to write and implement test procedures and methods.
- Experience in laboratory environments with equipment calibration and quality systems.
- Hands‑on mentality with structured problem‑solving skills.
- Strong communication and teamwork skills.
- Additional Assets:
- Experience with supplier collaboration and facility design.
- Familiarity with IEC norms and international test standards.
- Background in funded R&D or innovation projects.
- Experience with Skippy, MATLAB, Simulink, Python or CANape for data analysis and test automation.
- Any knowledge of lithium‑ion batteries (LIBs) is considered a plus.
