Imec is seeking an internship student to help with the mechanical characterization of neural probes and reporting (analyzing mechanical test data and producing a summary report).
Imec leverages its expertise in extreme miniaturization of electronic circuits to be a key driver behind the next‑generation of neural probes—small brain implants that contain electrode arrays for recording electrical signals from neurons. These Neuropixels probes are considered the gold standard in neuroscience and are distributed to more than a thousand laboratories worldwide.
Responsibilities- Mechanical validation of different modalities simulating chip‑brain interactions.
- Force measurements for in‑vitro implantation testing.
- Data handling and analysis using Python/Matlab.
- Safe handling and storage of fragile neural probes.
- Encapsulation of PCBs in an epoxy mold.
- Summarizing data in a structured report.
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in science or engineering fields.
- Fine handling skills to work with fragile probes.
- Highly punctual and organized, with an ability to perform repetitive work.
- Fluency in English (verbal and written).
- Familiarity with material testing, electronics and sensors; some hands‑on experience preferred.
- Comfortable working with chemicals and experience in a chemical or bio‑lab.
- Good analytical skills; ability to work with data in Python or Excel and automate data analysis.
