The University of Antwerp, Belgium, has announced applications for a full-time Doctoral Scholarship in Applied Microbiology and Biotechnology within the Department of Bioscience Engineering, Faculty of Science. This fully funded PhD opportunity is ideal for graduates passionate about microbiology, biotechnology, bacteriophages, human microbiome research, probiotics, and genetic engineering.
The selected doctoral researcher will work within the Laboratory of Applied Microbiology and Biotechnology (LAMB). Applicants should demonstrate a strong interest in one or more of the following research domains:
- Applied Microbiology
- Biotechnology
- Human Microbiome
- Probiotics
- Live Biotherapeutics
- Fermented Foods
- Women’s Health
- Children’s Health
- Nature-Based Solutions and Green Infrastructure Microbiome
- Genetic Engineering of Microorganisms
- Bacteriophages
- Bioremediation
Research projects are supervised by leading scientists including Prof. Sarah Lebeer, Prof. Irina Spacova, and Prof. Dieter Vandenheuvel.
Key Responsibilities- Conduct original research leading to a PhD thesis.
- Develop and implement a research plan with your supervisors.
- Publish scientific papers in peer-reviewed journals.
- Present research findings at international conferences.
- Contribute to ongoing research projects within the department.ilo>
- Apply for internal and external doctoral research funding.
- Support teaching and departmental research activities.
- Successfully defend your doctoral dissertation.
- Master’s degree in Bioscience Engineering, Microbiology, Biotechnology, Biological Sciences, or a related discipline.
- Students completing their master’s degree before the scholarship begins are also eligible.
- Excellent academic performance.
- Strong motivation for research in applied microbiology or biotechnology.
- Laboratory or bioinformatics experience is welcomed.
- Excellent written and spoken English.
- Willingness to apply for competitive external doctoral fellowships (such as FWO fellowships).
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively within an international research environment.
- Statement confirming willingness to actively compete for external doctoral funding
