At Houston Methodist, the Pharmacy IT Specialist is responsible for providing and coordinating pharmaceutical care to the patients of Houston Methodist through medication use evaluations, drug policy development, and continuous quality management activities related to his/her specialty focus area designed to improve operational efficiency and patient safety. The Pharmacy IT Specialist designs or customizes software and leads quality assurance processes that promote efficiency and improvement of business processes as part of an operational team to support medium to large scale projects.
Plans and participates in staff development and coordinates intradepartmental quality management and performance improvement initiatives related to the respective specialty areas of focus. Supports all users of application systems, timely implementation of and ongoing maintenance of applications, and provides the opportunity for enhanced user productivity in a culture dedicated to quality and safety.

QUALIFICATIONS EDUCATION- Bachelor of Science in Pharmacy or Doctor of Pharmacy degree
- Additional master's degree in business or pharmacy administration (i.e. MBA, MS) preferred
- Four years of hospital pharmacy experience OR two years of healthcare IT experience OR a graduate of a PGY 1 and 2 accredited pharmacy informatics residency program
- Project management skills strongly preferred
- Prior experience in a lead role, or HM experience and performance that demonstrates leadership abilities

- Texas Department of Licensing and within 90 days - Epic Beacon or Epic Willow Certification Required
- Demonstrates the skills and competencies necessary to safely perform the assigned job, determined through on-going skills, competency assessments, and performance evaluations
- Sufficient proficiency in speaking, reading, and writing the English language necessary to perform the essential functions of this job, especially with regard to activities impacting patient or employee safety or security

- Demonstrates advanced experience with electronic clinical systems and ability to apply data processing technology for the clinical and physician services areas
- Demonstrates advanced skills across all phases of system definition/implementation
- Demonstrates expert analytical, logic, problem-solving skills; advanced analysis and design skills, communication and documentation, advanced customer service skills
- Possesses expert knowledge of regulatory requirements (DNV, JCAHO, HIPAA, CMS, etc.) and the interrelation of regulations with electronic systems
- Possesses advanced skill in analysis of costs and benefits of the use of computer technology
- Has advanced knowledge of commonly used programming concepts, practices and procedures within the Information Technology field
- Demonstrates thorough understanding and is a leader in Change Management practices and procedures and has in-depth knowledge and experience in following build exports or migrations between Development, Training, Testing, and Production systems
- Demonstrates proficiency in supported computer systems and business processes which include troubleshooting and on-call support
- Demonstrates advanced project management skills, such as creating and managing project plans and cost benefit analysis
- Demonstrates ability to lead medium to large scale projects
- Demonstrates ability to Research competence in an area related to the practice of pharmacy
- Possesses strong experience and practical application with multiple programming languages
- Pharmacy department drug protocol knowledge and assessment expertise
- Exhibits strong interpersonal, teamwork and leaderships skills with all levels of the healthcare team
- Works closely with Information Systems, Pharmacy staff and other hospital departments to understand system programming requirements, capabilities and limitations, as well as to implement requested ordering and decision support tools.
- Promotes a positive work environment and leads the team to be dynamic and a focused work unit that actively helps one other to achieve optimal results.
- Collaborates with other health care professionals as needed for problem resolution and/or achievement of identified patient specific goals. Role models to team members effective communication skills, assisting in their development of such skills.
- Develops educational materials and provides educational programs for the pharmacy staff and other hospital personnel. Supports preceptors for students from the affiliated colleges of pharmacy and/or pharmacy residents.
