Position: ASC OR Charge Registered Nurse - MPO Ambulatory Surgery Center (Bellaire)

At Houston Methodist, the ASC OR Charge Registered Nurse (RN) position is a licensed staff nurse, an experienced clinician, functioning at the Competent to Proficient stage of Benner’s model of clinical practice. The ASC OR Charge RN is responsible for providing professional nursing care to a diverse patient population, conducting nursing assessments, assisting with exams and treatment, patient education, and maintaining medical records to achieve optimal patient outcomes while optimizing available resources, including surgical case management and perioperative patient care coordination.

The ASC OR Charge RN provides direct patient care effectively and efficiently, may include patients with varied and complex needs, communicates and collaborates with physicians and the interprofessional health care team, and demonstrates clinical competence when providing care, using technology, administering medications, performing procedures, and managing emergencies. The role assumes leadership responsibilities, including making assignments, coordinating flow, and leading shared governance initiatives.

Qualifications
  • Graduate of an education program approved by the credentialing body for the required credentials indicated below in the Certifications, Licenses and Registrations section.
  • Bachelor’s degree preferred.
Experience
  • Two years nursing experience in an operating room environment.
  • Previous charge nurse experience preferred.
Licenses and Certifications

Required

  • Registered Nurse (RN) licensure in Texas; must obtain permanent Texas license within 60 days if establishing residency.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification (American Heart Association).
  • Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification (American Heart Association).
  • Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) certification (American Heart Association).
  • Certified Operating Room Nurse (CNOR) certification (CCI).
Knowledge and Abilities
  • Demonstrates the skills and competencies necessary to safely perform the assigned job, determined through ongoing skills, competency assessments, and performance evaluations.
  • Sufficient proficiency in speaking, reading, and writing English necessary to perform the essential functions of this job, especially with regard to activities impacting patient or employee safety or security.
  • Ability to effectively communicate with patients, physicians, family members, and co-workers in a manner consistent with a customer service focus and application of positive language principles.
  • Uses therapeutic communication, which includes active listening and teaching, to establish a relationship with patients, families, and the interprofessional health care team to collaborate on the plan of care.
  • Strong assessment, organizational and problem‑solving skills as evidenced by capacity to prioritize multiple tasks and role components.
  • Ability to function independently and exercise judgment in interactions with physicians, the interprofessional care team, and patients and their families.
  • Uses critical thinking skills and clinical judgment to work autonomously as defined by the Nurse Practice Act.
  • Demonstrates proficient time management skills.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft products.

  • Leads daily huddles and utilizes daily management system techniques to drive unit-based improvements, makes daily staff assignments, and provides relief for breaks and lunches. Assigns preceptors and new orientees according to the needs of the department and the learner.
  • Maintains cooperative relationships among health care teams by communicating information, responding to requests, building rapport, and participating in team problem-solving methods. Seeks guidance from and offers guidance to the interprofessional health care team, when appropriate, and applies feedback to improve patient outcomes.
  • Implements staff education specific to patient populations and department processes, coaches and mentors other staff and students, and may include preceptorship. Uses peer-to-peer accountability toward improvement of department score for employee engagement.
