Diesel Mechanic
Ames Federal Contracting Group is seeking a skilled Diesel Mechanic to inspect, diagnose, repair, and maintain diesel-powered heavy equipment and construction vehicles used in highway, civil, mining, rail, and industrial construction projects. The mechanic plays a critical role in ensuring equipment reliability, safety, and operational efficiency.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Diagnose and repair diesel engines, hydraulic systems, electrical systems, transmissions, and drivetrain components.
- Perform preventive maintenance services, including 250-hour, 500-hour, 1,000-hour, and 2,000-hour service intervals.
- Conduct equipment inspections and troubleshoot mechanical issues.
- Maintain and repair heavy construction equipment such as:
- Excavators
- Dozers
- Wheel loaders
- Articulated haul trucks
- Skid steers
- On-road trucks
- Perform oil changes, fluid checks, and routine maintenance tasks.
- Fuel equipment and maintain accurate fuel logs.
- Ensure equipment complies with safety and regulatory requirements.
- Complete maintenance records, repair documentation, and work orders.
- Coordinate with operations and project teams to minimize equipment downtime.
- Adhere to all company safety policies and procedures.
Qualifications
- 10 years of experience repairing and maintaining diesel engines and heavy construction equipment.
- Strong troubleshooting and diagnostic skills.
- Experience working on CAT (Caterpillar) equipment preferred.
- Knowledge of hydraulic, electrical, and mechanical systems.
- Ability to read service manuals, schematics, and repair documentation.
- Valid driver's license required.
- Class B CDL with Tanker and Hazmat endorsements may be required for some positions.
- Ability to work flexible schedules, including day or night shifts when necessary.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
Physical Requirements
- Lift and carry heavy tools and components.
- Work outdoors in varying weather conditions.
- Stand, bend, kneel, climb, and work in confined spaces for extended periods.
- Safely operate service trucks and shop equipment.
Preferred Qualifications
- Technical training in diesel technology, heavy equipment repair, or a related field.
- OEM certifications (CAT, Cummins, etc.).
- Welding and fabrication experience.
- Construction industry experience.
