Primary Function:

The Reading & Literacy Program Coordinator is responsible for implementing and leading engaging literacy-focused activities for youth of all ages enrolled in the Out-of-School (OOS) program. This role emphasizes fostering a love of reading, strengthening literacy skills, and supporting inclusive programming that supports students’ growth and success across diverse backgrounds and abilities.

Essential Functions:
  • Coordinate literacy-based programming for children in grades K–6, including reading groups, book clubs, storytelling activities, and creative writing projects.
  • Provide age-appropriate support for literacy development, ensuring programming meets the needs of younger readers as well as older youth.
  • Collaborate with classroom teachers and program staff to integrate literacy strategies into daily programming.
  • Encourage student engagement in reading through interactive activities, incentives, and family involvement opportunities.
  • Provide individualized support to students needing extra help with reading and comprehension.

Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Performs related duties as assigned by the Site Director and Team Leads as the situation dictates.
  • Sign in and out at the front desk at each visit.
Qualifications/

Skills:
  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Strong passion for reading, literacy, and youth development.
  • Ability to plan creative, engaging activities that promote literacy for diverse age groups.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills with children, families, and staff.
  • Dependable, flexible, and enthusiastic in promoting a positive learning environment.
  • Understanding of literacy development stages and ability to adapt activities accordingly.
  • Commitment to maintaining Kids Can policies and confidentiality of program participants.
Working Conditions:
  • Gymnasium, computer lab, cafeteria, playground area and field.
Note:
  • This is a Federal Work Study (FWS) student employee position that is open only to currently enrolled Bellevue University students who have Federal Work Study as part of their financial aid package. Students must have completed a FAFSA and accepted their FWS offer before they can apply for a FWS position.
