Purpose of Position

Responsible for the safe and efficient operation of single axle trucks and related automotive construction and maintenance equipment over 26,000 GVW. Various unskilled and semi‑skilled labor tasks will be performed, including vehicle or equipment operation. Attendance at the assigned work locations is an essential function. The position is not conducive to telecommuting.

Essential Functions
  • Operate various types of single‑axle trucks and related equipment over 26,000 GVW, including front end loaders, backhoes, skid loaders, and sweepers on a limited basis.
  • Perform construction, general upkeep and maintenance activities including snow removal, mowing, lining, grading, spraying of chemicals, concrete work, and other activities related to assigned equipment operation.
  • Paint curbs, crosswalks, posts, and street lines; set up barricades and direct traffic as needed.
  • Establish grades and set concrete forms, pour and finish concrete; seal cracks in concrete; perform street and curb cuts and asphalt repairs.
  • Perform minor maintenance and repairs on assigned equipment, tools, and guardrails as needed.
  • Operate power, hand and electrical tools and equipment.
  • Complete and maintain records including work orders, chemical usage reports, maintenance reports, and grave location records.
  • Perform duties on an on‑call basis as needed.
  • Attendance at the assigned work location is an essential function.
Marginal Functions
  • Perform related work as directed or as the situation dictates.
  • Assist other departments on various projects as directed or as the situation dictates.
  • Basic computer operation skills for checking e‑mail, reviewing time sheets, printing documents, etc.
Essential Knowledge, Experience and Ability

Knowledge and skill in the operation, maintenance and use of trucks and related small construction equipment and tools, understanding of occupational hazards and safety precautions, knowledge of traffic laws and regulations, ability to read and follow oral and written instructions, physical strength and agility for strenuous manual labor and operating equipment for long hours, and ability to establish relationships with City employees and the public.

Essential

Education, Certification and/or Licenses
  • High school diploma or GED equivalent preferred.
  • Valid driver’s license at the time of hire.
  • Class B Commercial Driver’s License with air brake endorsement within six months from hiring and to be maintained throughout employment.
  • Commercial Driver’s License tanker endorsement (N) within six months of hire and to be maintained throughout employment.
  • NE pesticide applicator’s license within 18 months from hiring and to be maintained throughout employment.
Essential Physical Demands and Typical Working Conditions

Work performed indoors and outdoors requiring physical activity: extended periods of sitting, walking, standing, kneeling, bending, crouching, reaching, stooping, climbing. Must transport across city and surrounding jurisdictions, maneuver rough terrain. Must tolerate indoor/outdoor conditions with dirt, dust, noise, poor lighting, and inclement weather. May lift or carry equipment weighing up to 50 pounds frequently and up to 100 pounds occasionally. Must have hand‑eye coordination and manual dexterity for work involving vehicles, computers, tools.

May work in darkness occasions. Moderate noise level. Requires public interaction and may be stressful with irate citizens or time constraints.
