Job Description

POSITION OBJECTIVE: This position is responsible for teaching intermediate through advanced level middle school orchestras.

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Provide full orchestra opportunity for advanced classes.
  • Provide performance opportunities for students, including orchestra festivals, solo and ensemble as well as day and evening concerts.
  • Plan and organize music program‑related field trips.
  • Continue professional development through district/league meetings and staff development opportunities.
  • Coordinate with colleagues at all levels to provide an articulated 5‑12 string program.
  • Deliver the BSD orchestra curriculum as posted on Global Scholar.
  • Center instruction on high expectations for student achievement.
  • Demonstrate effective teaching practices through questioning and discussion techniques.
  • Recognize individual student learning needs and develop strategies to address them.
  • Provide clear focus on subject matter content and curriculum.
  • Foster and manage a safe, positive learning environment.
  • Use student data to modify instruction and improve student learning.
  • Maintain accurate student records and design assessments.
  • Communicate with parents and the school community.
  • Exhibit collaborative and collegial practices.
  • Participate in a professional community to grow and develop professionally.
  • Establish student growth goals annually.
  • Direct the activities of assigned non‑certified personnel.
  • Attend required staff meetings and other activities as directed by district and building principal.
  • Participate in site‑based decision‑making processes.

REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS:

  • Reports directly to the Building Administrator.

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE:

  • Required – Possess or qualify for immediate issuance of a valid Washington State teaching certificate with an endorsement in instrumental music.
  • Preferred – Experience working with parents and promoting parent participation in support of music education.
  • Experience instructing students through objective and conceptual based lessons.
  • Experience teaching an advanced level high school jazz program and concert bands.

KNOWLEDGE:

  • Music score interpretation, conducting and rehearsal techniques.
  • Instrumental literature and concepts for high school level ensembles.
  • Teaching students arranging or composing with music software (Sibelius).
  • Instruction using sound research‑based instruction, best practices and pedagogy.
  • Knowledge of Bellevue School District’s curriculum and instructional practices.

SKILLS:

  • Experience with middle school aged students.
  • Musicianship on multiple wind, percussion and string instruments.
  • Ability to manage inventories, equipment, and music library.
  • Commitment to the District’s vision, mission and goals.
  • Commitment to equity and culturally relevant teaching practices.
  • High quality instruction using differentiated practices and data‑driven decision‑making.
  • Ability to individualize instruction for gifts, mainstreamed special education, English language learners, and diverse backgrounds.
  • Ability to develop students’ technology literacy.
  • Team collaboration and effective communication.
  • Use varied assessments including performance tasks, portfolios, and self‑assessment.
  • Attend ongoing professional development activities.
  • Positive attitude and belief in student success.
  • Adherence to Board policies and legal requirements.
  • Meet punctuality and attendance expectations.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Typical requirements include stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, finger dexterity, hearing, seeing, and repetitive motions.
  • May lift up to 50 pounds occasionally, up to 20 pounds frequently, or up to 10 pounds frequently.
