Earth And Space Sciences, Part Time Faculty

The Earth and Space Sciences program seeks dedicated and motivated individuals to teach courses in the fields of Astronomy, Geology, Environmental Science, Meteorology and/or Oceanography. Faculty may teach one or multiple subjects within the program, depending upon their experience and qualifications. The successful candidate will demonstrate a commitment to student success through teaching and learning excellence. The selected candidate will perform duties and functions with the support of the program chair of Earth and Space Sciences and will directly report to the Science Division Dean.

Pay, benefits and work schedule

Quarterly remuneration for 5-credit lecture class is $6,418.75 - $7,824.65. Compensation is prorated based on type and duration of assignments. Individuals newly hired to Adjunct Professor group at the college are placed at the minimum rate per union bargaining agreement. Certain positions may also be eligible for assignment/project-based additional compensation, including a High Demand Stipend up to $8,350 annually, prorated based on the discipline and duration of the assignment.

All additional compensations are subject to change depending on funding and negotiated agreement.

About the department

The Earth and Space Sciences Program teaches a range of courses encompassing astronomy, environmental science, geology, meteorology, and oceanography. Approximately half of our course sections are hybrid or in-person, typically meeting between two to five times per week on the Bellevue College campus.

Essential functions

• Teach a 6-credit combined lecture/lab class or a 5 credit Lecture class. Class sizes range from 28 to 36 students typically. Some astronomy sections are up to 55 students.

• Teach in face-to-face settings and/or synchronous and/or asynchronous virtual settings.

• Prepare course materials, including varied assessments of student knowledge.

• Design and facilitate learning experiences centered around student needs and interests by using varied instruction methods and resources.

• Hold weekly office hours in accordance with the current faculty contract and generally assist students in person one-on-one and/or both through electronic media and in-person.

• Use data, self-reflection, and student/colleague feedback to revise your instruction, improve student success and better serve historically underserved, underrepresented, or marginalized student populations (e.g., students with disabilities, Black and Indigenous students of color, first-generation college students, LGBTQIA+ students, veterans, English language learners, etc.).

• Grade and/or provide useful feedback to students in a way that promotes student understanding and improvement. Assign overall course grades.
