Job Description

POSITION OBJECTIVE: This position is responsible for teaching intermediate through advanced level middle school orchestras.

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Provide full orchestra opportunity for advanced classes.
  • Provide performance opportunities for students, including orchestra festivals, solo and ensemble as well as day and evening concerts.
  • Plan and organize music program‑related field trips, including one‑day, extended, and/or overnight trips, in‑state, out‑of‑state, or international.
  • Continue professional development through district/league meetings and staff development opportunities.
  • Coordinate with colleagues at all levels to provide an articulated 5‑12 string program.
  • Deliver the BSD orchestra curriculum as posted on Global Scholar (district website).
  • Center instruction on high expectations for student achievement by establishing a culture for learning, providing clear communication, and engaging students.
  • Demonstrate effective teaching practices through questioning, discussion techniques, and reflection.
  • Recognize individual student learning needs and develop strategies to address those needs.
  • Provide clear focus on subject matter content and curriculum through knowledge of content and pedagogy, setting instructional outcomes, and designing coherent instruction.
  • Foster and manage a safe, positive learning environment with respect, rapport, classroom procedures, student behavior, and safe physical space.
  • Use multiple student data elements to modify instruction and improve learning; design assessments, use them in instruction, and maintain accurate records.
  • Communicate and collaborate with parents and the school community through ongoing communication.
  • Exhibit collaborative and collegial practices focused on improving instructional practice and student learning.
  • Participate in a professional community, grow and develop professionally, and demonstrate professionalism.
  • Annually establish student growth goals to ensure progress over time.
  • Direct activities of assigned non‑certificated personnel.
  • Attend or participate in all required staff meetings and other activities deemed necessary by the District and/or building principal.
  • Participate in site‑based decision‑making processes.
REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS

Reports directly to and is supervised by the Building Administrator.

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE

Required:

  • Possess or qualify for immediate issuance of a valid Washington State teaching certificate with an endorsement in instrumental music.

Preferred:

  • Experience in working with parents and promoting parent participation in support of music education.
  • Experience instructing students through objective and conceptual based lessons.
  • Experience teaching an advanced level high school jazz program and concert bands.
KNOWLEDGE
  • Music score interpretation, conducting and rehearsal techniques.
  • Instrumental literature, music skills and concepts for high school level ensembles.
  • Teaching students arranging or composing with music software (Sibelius).
  • Sound research‑based instruction, best practices and pedagogy.
  • Knowledge of Bellevue School District's curriculum and instructional practices (teacher‑directed instruction, literature‑based reading, problem‑based learning, math problem‑solving, use of math manipulatives, cooperative learning, and integrated curriculum).
SKILLS
  • Training in and/or direct experience with middle school aged students.
  • Skill and musicianship to perform proficiently on multiple wind, percussion, and string instruments.
  • Ability to manage inventories, equipment, and music library at a high level.
  • Commitment to District's vision, mission and goals.
