World Languages Adjunct Faculty (Chinese)

The World Languages Program at Bellevue College is seeking qualified candidates for a pool of adjunct instructors dedicated to creating equitable learning environments. World Languages faculty teach eight languages at the college:
Arabic, ASL, Chinese, French, German, Italian, Japanese, and Spanish.

The program intends to screen qualified candidates for a Chinese language position for Fall 2026 term. This position will start in Fall quarter, which begins on September 21. Selected candidates will teach college-level Chinese language class to a diverse student population. World Languages faculty perform their duties under the general direction of the Dean of Arts and Humanities.

Adjunct Professor is typically assigned as needed on a quarterly basis, with no expectation of continued employment beyond the current appointment. Quarterly remuneration for a 5-credit lecture class is $6,418.75 - $7,824.66. Compensation is prorated based on type and duration of assignments. Individuals newly hired to Adjunct Professor group at the college are placed at the minimum rate per union bargaining agreement.

Certain positions may also be eligible for assignment/project-based additional compensation, including a High Demand Stipend up to $8,350 annually, prorated based on the discipline and duration of the assignment. All additional compensations are subject to change depending on funding and negotiated agreement.

Eligible employees are offered generous benefits through Washington State plans that includes multiple medical, dental, life and disability coverage choices for employees and dependents; choices of retirement and deferred compensation plans; paid personal leave plan; transit program, reduced tuition, employee discounts and memberships, etc. Eligible employees are faculty who work a combined load of at least 50% at Bellevue College and other Washington State public institutions of higher education for two consecutive quarters are eligible for health and dental insurance at the start of the second consecutive quarter.

In addition to teaching, faculty maintains office hours and may participate in department and college activities. This position is represented by the Bellevue College Association of Higher Education (BCAHE) union.

Essential Functions:

  • Teach 5-credit first and/or second-year Chinese language classes onsite.
  • Teach in face-to-face, hybrid, synchronous and/or asynchronous online modalities.
  • Prepare and implement lessons to achieve assigned courses' learning outcomes.
  • Hold weekly onsite office hours according to current collective bargaining contract.
  • Demonstrate a strong commitment to student success through fostering a positive and caring learning environment where diversity and pluralism are valued.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Master's degree from an accredited institution in appropriate language or closely related field such as applied linguistics, literature or interdisciplinary studies related to Chinese language, or education with language teaching focus (please explain in your cover letter how you meet this requirement and for Chinese language).
  • Coursework or other training in language teaching methodology.
  • One year of experience in language teaching.
  • Near-native or native-level competence in Chinese language.
  • Demonstrated record of work in a team environment with a diverse faculty, staff, and student population.
  • Ability to collaborate and communicate effectively with students and colleagues.
  • Ability to teach onsite from Monday to Thursday.
