Position: ORCHESTRA TEACHER 0.8 2026-27 (TYEE MS, NEWPORT HS, ELEMENTARY)

Position Objective

This position is responsible for teaching intermediate through advanced level middle school orchestras.

Duties & Responsibilities
  • Provide full orchestra opportunity for advanced classes.
  • Provide performance opportunities for students, including orchestra festivals, solo and ensemble as well as day and evening concerts.
  • Plan and organize music program-related field trips, including one-day and extended/overnight trips in-state or out of state or out of country.
  • Continue professional development through district/league meetings and staff development opportunities.
  • Coordinate with colleagues at all levels to provide an articulated 5-12 string program.
  • Deliver the BSD orchestra curriculum as posted on Global Scholar.
  • Center instruction on high expectations for student achievement by establishing a culture for learning, providing clear communication with students, and engaging them in learning.
  • Demonstrate effective teaching practices through use of questioning and discussion techniques and reflection on teaching.
  • Recognize individual student learning needs and develop strategies to address those needs.
  • Provide clear focus on subject matter content and curriculum through knowledge of content and pedagogy, setting instructional outcomes, and designing coherent instruction.
  • Foster and manage a safe, positive learning environment, manage classroom procedures, student behavior, and organize a safe physical space for student learning.
  • Use multiple student data elements to modify instruction and improve student learning; design student assessments, use assessment in instruction, and maintain accurate records.
  • Communicate and collaborate with parents and the school community through effective and ongoing communication.
  • Exhibit collaborative and collegial practices focused on improving instructional practice and student learning.
  • Participate in a professional community, expected to grow and develop professionally and demonstrate professionalism.
  • Annually establish student growth goals to ensure progress over time.
  • Direct the activities of assigned non-certificated personnel.
  • Attend or participate in all required staff meetings and other activities deemed necessary by the District and/or building principal.
  • Participate in site-based decision‑making processes.
Reporting Relationships

Reports directly to and is supervised by the Building Administrator.

Education & Experience
  • Possess or qualify for immediate issuance of a valid Washington State teaching certificate with an endorsement in instrumental music.
Preferred
  • Experience in working with parents and promoting parent participation in support of music education.
  • Experience instructing students through objective and conceptual based lessons.
  • Experience in teaching an advanced level high school jazz program and concert bands.
Knowledge (Entry)
  • Knowledge and skills in music score interpretation, conducting and rehearsal techniques.
  • Knowledge of instrumental literature, music skills and concepts for high school level ensembles.
  • Knowledge in teaching students arranging or composing with music software (Sibelius).
  • Knowledge of instruction using sound‑based, research‑based instruction, best practices and pedagogy.
  • Knowledge of Bellevue School District's curriculum and instructional practices such as teacher‑directed instruction, literature‑based reading, problem‑based learning, math problem‑solving, cooperative learning and integrated curriculum.
Skills (Entry)
  • Training with or direct experience with middle school aged students.
  • Musicianship to perform proficiently on multiple wind, percussion and string instruments.
  • Ability to manage inventories, equipment, and music library at a high level.
  • Commitment to the District's vision, mission and goals.
  • Demonstrates a commitment to equity through culturally relevant teaching practices.
