Reporting to the Dean of Arts and Humanities, the Associate Dean of Basic and Transitional Studies (BaTS) and English Language Institute (ELI) provides collaborative leadership for programs serving adult learners, English language learners, and students preparing for college-level coursework. The role includes oversight of instruction, staffing, curriculum, and operations across adult basic education, high school completion, English Language Acquisition, and intensive English programs, ensuring alignment with institutional priorities and best practices.

The Associate Dean exercises authority within assigned program areas and works under the direction of the Dean of Arts & Humanities to implement divisional priorities.

As a member of the division's leadership team, the Associate Dean works closely with faculty, staff, and campus partners to support instructional quality, strengthen student pathways, and advance equitable student outcomes. The Associate Dean translates divisional and institutional priorities into effective practice, supports faculty excellence, and fosters continuous improvement in program design and delivery. As designated, the Associate Dean represents the division in college wide, and system-level initiatives aligned with Bellevue College's mission and student success goals.

Position salary range: $/year - $/year. The salary will be determined based on candidate's qualifications and related experience, as well as market and business considerations. Typically, new hire starts no higher than $119,976 based on Bellevue College Exempt salary schedule.

The employee is scheduled to work 40 hours per workweek. This position is exempt from the overtime provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act, which means that you are not eligible for overtime pay.

Basic and Transitional Studies (BaTS) and the English Language Institute (ELI) are essential programs at Bellevue College that support students on their path to college and career success. These programs serve precollege learners'including immigrants, refugees, international students, and U.S. residents'by building foundational skills in English, math, and academic readiness.

Academic faculty and staff oversight:

  • Oversee curriculum development, instructional quality, and program review to align with division and College strategic goals
  • Supervise and support Basic and Transitional Studies faculty, chairs, and staff, including hiring, evaluation, mentoring, tenure, professional development opportunities, and promotion processes, in alignment with applicable collective bargaining agreements and institutional policies
  • Work directly with faculty and staff to support effective program design and delivery, including curriculum, course offerings, instructional schedules, and modalities that meet student and program needs
  • Support Division Dean in ensuring that faculty workloads, onboarding, and professional development reflect equity-minded, student-centered, and wellness-informed practice.
  • Support assessment, accreditation, and compliance processes to meet institutional, state, and federal standards.
  • Promote inclusive pedagogy, interdisciplinary collaboration, and evidence-based teaching and learning strategies.
  • Facilitate implementation of compliance-related instructional initiatives (e.g., Title II, I-BEST, LACES).
  • Ensure federal, state, and local reporting requirements are met with accuracy and timeliness.
