Talascend is currently seeking a Materials Welding Engineer for a contract opportunity with our client in Bellevue, Washington.

Overview

This role involves working as part of a high-functioning team of engineers focused on materials processing, supply chain development, and supplier qualification for next-generation materials and components used in sodium-cooled fast reactors. The engineer will develop welding processes for reactor core components and establish testing programs to support reactor design and qualification efforts.

Responsibilities
  • Develop and qualify welding techniques for nuclear reactor core internals for the sodium-cooled fast reactor.
  • Weld process development and qualification for ferritic-martensitic steels and austenitic stainless steels using multiple technologies (resistance pressure welding, TIG, laser, etc.).
  • Generate specifications and procedures for weld processes and review engineering documentation to ensure proper callouts.
  • Oversee the operation of weld equipment to produce test coupons supporting process qualification and performance modeling.
  • Develop destructive and nondestructive inspection criteria for weld certification.
  • Use materials engineering principles to develop models of material performance and validate through laboratory testing.
  • Create test requirements, plans, specifications, and procedures for testing activities.
  • Manage test programs for weld qualification, including mechanical properties, burst testing, thermal creep, creep-fatigue, neutron irradiation, thermal aging, and sodium exposure.
  • Analyze test data and generate technical reports documenting new insights related to reactor design and qualification.
  • Coordinate with project teams to ensure materials development and testing meet program objectives for various initiatives.
  • Assist with supplier audits in accordance with ASME NQA-1-2015 standards.
Qualifications
  • Minimum of 4 years of related experience with a bachelor's degree; or a master's degree.
  • Degree in Materials Science/Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related technical discipline preferred.
  • Strong understanding of metallurgy, including fabrication and thermomechanical processing of ferrous alloys.
  • Experience working within stringent quality systems such as NQA-1, ISO-9001, or AS9100 is preferred.
  • General understanding of nuclear reactor design and its impact on materials is a plus.
  • Ability to work independently to solve challenging problems.
  • Demonstrated trust, integrity, open communication, respect, and a team-oriented mindset.
Demonstrated ability to perform the duties of this position through relevant experience, training, or education.
