Our client is looking for a System Design Engineer, Chemical/Gas. This position is focused on process systems design, analysis, systems engineering, and engineering oversight. In this role, you will act as a system design engineer for advanced nuclear reactor projects. The successful candidate will integrate and coordinate with engineers working on interfacing systems and will work as part of a high-performing team of engineers and scientists.
Location: Bellevue, WA
Duration: 12 Months
Compensation: $50.00 - $70.00/hr

Summary: Focused on process systems design, analysis, systems engineering, and engineering oversight. Act as a system design engineer for advanced nuclear reactor projects, integrating and coordinating with engineers working on interfacing systems.
Key Responsibilities:
- Design of nuclear and industrial process systems and sub-systems from requirements through final design.
- Create and maintain mass and energy balance models.
- Coordinate the review of analyses, such as thermal, seismic, structural, pipe stress, heat transfer, and other analyses performed by others and integrate the results into plant design delivery.
- Identify and ensure effective application of correct design codes into the design of plant systems such as ASME, ANS, ASTM, IEEE, NFPA, etc.
- Provide technical direction and guidance to engineers in applicable nuclear and non-nuclear related design standards.
- Analyze and allocate regulatory criteria and standards to complex mechanical and process system design.
- Support planning efforts and maintain schedule adherence for design activities within a system, as well as their integration with an overall plant design delivery schedule.
- Interface with the design team to create and manage drawing packages of system designs, including but not limited to P&IDs, 3D models, and system interface drawings.
- Interface with design disciplines (mechanical, I&C, civil, and nuclear) to identify and develop plant design information and specify system design and performance criteria.
- Provide technical direction and oversight of supplier projects.
- Establish and maintain system requirements and specification documents, such as Engineering Design Specifications for major plant equipment.
- Propose and initiate testing programs for plant system qualification, as needed.
- Provide support and oversight during test execution, evaluation of test results, and reporting of test results.
- Plan verification and validation activities for system, equipment, and component level requirements.
- Develop and review technical design documents, such as System Design Descriptions, Interface Control Documents, Engineering Design Specifications, etc.
- Generate design packages for system designs including coordinating of calculations, design reports, drawings, and specifications.
- B.S. in Chemical or Nuclear Engineering, or related discipline from an accredited university and 10+ years direct experience with proven mechanical systems skills. M.S. in engineering discipline can be credited for 2 years of experience.
- Demonstrated experience with thermodynamics, fluids (including liquid metals), heat transfer, materials, system controls and mechanics, gas handling and processing.
- Demonstrated experience building and maintaining complex mass and energy balance models using Aspen HYSYS and Aspen Plus.
- Experience with design, modeling, and testing of submersible electromagnetic pumps.
- Ability to read and draw P&IDs.
- Demonstrated experience in the design of complex mechanical systems, structures, and first-of-a-kind equipment, specifically in sodium environments.
- Experience working to quality standards on design activities, such as ASME NQA-1, AS 9100, ISO 9001, or equivalent.
- Experience working with suppliers on system design and fabrication.
- Must be a self-starter and possess the ability to coordinate with minimal direction.
- Ability to handle projects that include many competing objectives and design constraints, with ability to resolve conflicts between objectives.
- Excellent technical writing, verbal communication, and presentation skills.
- Experience in high temperature and multi-discipline integration.
- Familiarity with FMEA, Event Tree Analysis, Fault Tree Analysis, Probabilistic and Deterministic Risk Analysis.
- Familiarity with the Defense in Depth safety philosophy.
