- Ensures compliance with laboratory licensing, accreditation, and regulatory standards; maintains required records and stays current with regulations and technical/clinical advances relevant to the laboratory and Mohs histology.
- Performs daily departmental quality control, instrument and stain quality control, and routine preventive maintenance. Maintains and operates laboratory and surgical equipment, including the cryostat, in accordance with Washington State Department of Health standards.
- Assists with Quality Assurance activities, including survey documentation, procedure development, written protocols, quality-control records, and maintaining accurate records of total cases, excisions, and other departmental activities.
- Follows established laboratory policies and procedures when testing systems or processes fall outside acceptable performance levels. Identifies problems that may adversely affect tissue processing, slide preparation, or reporting of results; corrects problems when appropriate or immediately notifies the Mohs surgeon and manager. Documents all corrective actions and responds to actual or potential risks to patients or employees by taking appropriate action to correct, minimize, or prevent harm.
- Prepares and maintains solutions and stains; maps and chroma-codes tissue specimens according to Mohs technique; cuts horizontal and vertical frozen sections; prepares and disposes of tissue according to accepted practices; and maintains quality control of all slides processed.
- Labels, files, stores, and tracks Mohs histology slides; submits slides to the Mohs surgeon for diagnostic confirmation; distributes reports according to established procedures; maintains records of slide locations; and coordinates ordering and return of slides from outside laboratories or offices.
- Performs data entry of surgical information for all patients and generates surgery notes and correspondence to referring physicians using Logician and photography software.
- Creates and maintains accurate departmental files, logs, and records, including the Mohs log, Modified Mohs log, Quality Control journal, outside-slide log, and inventory records. Ensures information is entered, updated, and recorded accurately and in a timely manner.
- Monitors laboratory supply and equipment inventory, orders supplies, maintains ordering records, receives and verifies shipments for accuracy and quality, and organizes supplies and equipment in a systematic and accessible manner.
- Sets up sterile trays, performs autoclaving, assists with wound checks and post-operative follow-up calls as needed, uploads pre- and post-operative surgical photographs into patient charts, and assists the Mohs surgeon during procedures.
- Interacts with patients in a supportive manner consistent with the established patient-experience model. Provides emergency assistance as required or directed by the appropriate authority.
